Power steering is heavy on Mrs' Seat Altea XL 2010, why?

Featured Replies

Anyone got a suggestion as to why my Mrs' 2010 Seat Altea has heavy power steering when its been stood still overnight?

When she starts it and turns in the street its heavy for the first 10-20 seconds but then it comes alive, is the pump on the blink?

The car is only just 3yrs old so wouldn't have thought its the battery?!

Could be the battery. I would get it checked for faults. Have either the yellow or red steering lights come on when it is misbehaving?

No lights on, best I do an OBDII check for fault codes and check the battery for power.

I don't know if a generic obdii scanner would pick steering related faults, VCDS would be best.

Sorry to hijack the thread. I had a wheel bearing done yesterday, when I got the car back the steering feels weird. When the wheel is past centre and on a constant turn the weighting seems to intermittently change as if it is trying to correct itself. No warning lights on the dash. Mechanically, everything seems to have been put back correctly.

Any thoughts ??

Bump, Bump................anybody,any thoughts??

Does it drive straight?

The battery can be flattened before the car leaves the forecourt for the first time.

Depending on how flat the battery is will affect it life.

Repeated short journey's in the dark can finish off a battery in weeks.

Turning any electrical load on before starting the engine (lights for example) and then turning them off after the engine is a common mistake.

What I'm trying to say is a three year old battery can very easily be the cause of the problem.

Yeah, mine drives straight. It's not tracking. The car was put in "D" and driven while jacked up either side, to try and identify a bearing noise, I wonder if this has damaged anything, driveshafts maybe???
