Strange Bluetooth Media behaviour

I have a strange issue with bluetooth media, and it has happened with my current phone (sony xperia) and my old iphone.

 

I have columbus and bluetooth - sometimes when I get in the car the maxidot shows a bluetooth symbol under the phone ID and signal, sometimes it shows that symbol, and also what looks like a little ipod, presumably showing media link.

 

In the columbus unit, in the media options screen, more often than not it just shows CD, Radio, Aux, but sometimes it comes up with a BT option as well, but this is usually greyed out - the columbus BT media option doesn't always correspond with the maxidot ipod signal, they can appear independently of each other.

 

Anyone had the same?  I don't have MDI...
