EA211 1.2 tsi - Any good?

Featured Replies

I have noticed there are now a few people with the 1.2 tsi 16vOctavia (EA211 - cam belt?) in the forum.

My current car is a Superb MkI 1.9 PD which has been great (reliable + 50mpg) but is getting on a bit and I am worried about getting a new diesel - lots of my friends have had very expensive DPF issues (incuding an engine written off due to diesel contamination of sump oil!)  although I must admint I liked my test drive in a 1.6 diesel Octavia III.

Clealy the 1.2tsi looks in theory like a reasonable alternative with a reasonable blend of official performance and economy figures. My question is what is it like in real life, espcially re economy as I have a lengthy commute.  I have not managed to find a EA211 1.2 to test drive yet.

I have a 1.2tsi combi. I ordered the 1.2, partly down to keeping the purchase cost down, then maybe the running cost and partly because I/wife now only do around 6,000 miles p.a.

So 3 months and just 1500 miles down the line...

I can honestly say that I'm impressed with the engine. We have a real world 40.1mpg on the screen, that's from new with a lot of short journeys. Obviously, like all cars, longer motorway trips at around 75 bring better results, near to 50mpg, (I can get 50mpg but get bored!).

It feels very light, hasn't got much inertia, (change down on a downhill at say 55mph from 6th to 5th, no engine braking, to 4th no engine braking, to 3rd... the revs rise but again no significant engine braking (a little experiment to annoy the wife). It takes off from the lights well.

Only downsides: Doesn't sound pleasant with windows down (very quiet inside). Not much going on above 80 in the acceleration dept (no surprise). On steep junction getaways you feel the lack of torque.

Overall I could recommend though.

Hi,

I picked up my 1.2 TSI SE on Friday i.e. 11/10/13. It has been 3 days now and already done 340 miles. I must tell you the moment I sat in the car it gave me a big smile on my face. I am 6’2” and no car has been this comfortable for me.

Today we did a road trip to London - Oxford - London ( 115 miles ) and averaged 56.8 MPG. Since my last refuel (done at the time of pickup) the computer is showing 50.5 MPG (mixed driving). So far I have done 282 miles and the computer still shows another 300 miles to refill.

This engine has enough power on the motorway, country roads and of course the city. The engine is the smoothest of all the engines. Its so quiet and refined at high speeds.

I would highly recommend this engine to everyone.

hello, can you compare it with 1.4 TSI?

hello, can you compare it with 1.4 TSI?

Hi,

I did test drive 1.4 before going for 1.2. So its based on my opinion and driving experience.

I found 1.2 much refined and smoother than 1.4. To be honest if you don't know the engine size you are going to be driving then it would be difficult to tell which engine it is unless you rev really hard. initially I was bit hesitant going for 1.2 as my Fiat 500 was 1.2 and it was hard to even push that little body with 1.2 (I understand Skoda's 1.2 is a turbo engine).

So the sales executive took me for a 40 mins test drive in a 1.4. I was very happy with the engine and told him that lets not waste our time driving a 1.2. When we reached back to the showroom, he asked me about my driving experience and I told him "you have managed to sell me a 1.4 and lets do the paperwork". He replied "now lets test 1.4". Yes you guessed it right, he lied to me about the engine, it was 1.2 which I was driving. I was shocked and surprised at the same time and when I drove 1.4, I couldn't find any difference apart from fuel consumption figures.

On a 30 miles test run 1.2 gave me 55.6 MPG and 1.4 showed 49.2. And, 1.2 is much quieter.

It completely depends what are you expecting from a car and at the end of the day it all comes down to the mental block we have about the engine sizes these days. Yes, I see a difference between 1.2 and 2.0 VRS but I would no way spend extra £1200 for 1.4.

Thanks for that, sounds promising. I am also on the big side (hence the name) at 6ft 4" and my last two cars have been Skodas (Octavia & Superb) as I can't get comfortable in many other non VAG cars (except Volvo).

I tend to try and buy new (but time it for a large discount) and run until it has well over 100k, then semi retire it for my wife to use locally (i.e. would not suit DPF). Taking my time and waiting for a bigger discount.

Sounds like a good plan.

There is a website called carwow.com try and visit if you haven't yet. I got a good deal from there too. £300 discount with 0% and 3 services however if you buy it out right then of course you are looking at a good discount or else a pre reg is a good option.

Keep me posted fella. All the best.
