Well I stumbled upon this by accident.

Fascinating. The first part more so for caravan owners but for the rest of you, skip to part 2 at the bottom explaining about why a short rear axle to towbar distance is good. Ok maybe that is also only for caravan and trailer owners. :happy:

TP he also nicely explains about low profile tyres and the marshmallows you so like. :happy:

When we picked up our horse trailer some 2½ years ago, the first thing the salesman said was that the Yeti would be very good tow car because of the short rear overhang.

 

He wasn't wrong.

Good point Captianslogg, I top mine up to the fully laden (four people +luggage) as marked inside the fuel filler flap.

It frightens me that there are those towing caravans who find anything new, surprising or informative in that article.

They should understand all those simple (and self evident) facts and basic mechanics before being allowed to tow.

A well written article from my quick scan though.

Erm............... I bought my first caravan two weeks ago................

Well I've been towing caravans for 30 years and I found some interesting points in that article.

You never know everything.

OK

I appreciate that came over a trifle "snottery"

Yes I have towed, twin axle cattle trailers behind saloon cars.

Overweight unbraked trailers ditto.

Braked trailers with an all up weight exceeding 3500kg. (behind the steyr puch)

Poxy very short high and unstable army trailers behind 30 year army landrovers with the steering box hanging off (in my time with the TA)

camping trailer at 80mph odd, and sustained.

but never a caravan.

Had a tyre blow out like a wet fart whilst moving a couple of heaves of blocks, on a wee single axle trailer.

All without incident.

I appreciate coming from a farm background I had a head start.

But also educated by a savvy father, who despite covering enormous distances throughout Ireland in his cattle buying days and many excursions as a Councillor.

never had an accident.

That I am aware of.

We are all different.

I am not good Socially, perhaps somewhere on the Aspergers spectrum?

what a good post Marcus, but I'm afraid that many caravanners drive as though they have no idea what they are doing. Your background has given you a head start but articles like the one 9million found give those new to towing some real chance of understanding what you have learned. I hope no one took your earlier post badly and that if they did they now know it wasn't meant unpleasantly.
