EGR delete/Elephant mod

Featured Replies

So as my Egr valve has started leaking oil, iv decided i am going put a egr delete kit in its place. Does anyone have a proper quide to doing this and where to also put the blanking plate.

I am also going to do the elephant mod at the same time. What do i do here and what exactly does it do. Hope can help

  • Egr decreases emissions but lowers mpg (I'm an automotive engineering 3rd year student doing my final year project on the effects an egr valve on a diesel engine)

  • I think you need a 19mm inlet as that is the size of the CCV hose, otherwise it may cause unwanted pressure but using a vented catch can is the way I'll be going.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the elephant mod if you'reddoing the egr delete too. Independently they're both fine (apart from seepage from turbo oil seals) on their own.

Wouldnt have a clue its my 1st fabia vrs all its a 54 plate if that helps.

So if i do just the egr delete theres no point me doing the elephant mod?

I've done both and i know a few others have done both but never really heard anyone say it's pointless before.

54 plate means you should have a ASZ engine code, I ask because the two engines have different EGR systems.

EGR delete stops exhaust gasses with soot particles being put into the intake on part throttle so technically it should make the intake temps cooler as you not putting hot exhaust gasses in.

Elephant mod stops oil going into the intake and covering the pipework and intercooler in oil gunk.

I haven't got either but I am going to be doing the elephant mod as soon as I get my finger out and would do an EGR delete if I was getting the car remapped.

Ok cheers im going to do the egr delete as my egr valve has packed in. And i will be getting it mapped next year.

I think i will do the elephant mod as reading from what people have done it seems good. I understand you just feed the pipe down butnread people put slits in them.. where do you put the slit as i doubt il use a oil catch can.

If you're planning on the map I'd just get it done now and map out the EGR then.

From my understanding you put them at the exhaust end of the pipe as it stops water collecting and blocking when it's cold.

Im not planning on mapping it till around april/may next year so just guna put the egr delete in now.

And ok so how exactly do you do the slit and where.. am i just been stupid lol

I'd imagine just a stanely knife and make a few slits at the end where you'll be venting to the atmosphere.

I found the egr delete very easy to install, was my first time too at undergoing such a project, now my next plan is to fit at front mounted intercooler, after seeing all the current setup for the standard intercooler I am confident I can complete this job successfully also.

First up this is the kit I purchased

http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/darkside-1-9-8v-tdi-pd130-pd150-egr-delete-race-pipe-57mm.html

Everything you need is right there.

I learned a lot from watching this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn6jiEpADYg

The set up on the VRS is different from the golf in the video due to the fact that the VRS does not have the EGR cooler, this in fact makes the job on the VRS much easier since all parts about re-rooting the coolent pipes in the video are irrelevant, however removal of the EGR valve and neck pipe underneath are identical to the video.

Once the value and under-pipe are removed the kit is self explanatory, just be sure to pick up a new gasket from your local VW or skoda dealer, to fit under the blanking plate, cost me all of £3.10 from from a VW dealer, thats the only part the kit lacks, you could always use the old gasket I suppose but for the sake of £3 why bother, I personally always like to use new gaskets whenever removing any part that requires them.

The blanking plate fits directly onto the top of the turbo from where the lower part of the under pipe (under the EGR valve) is removed from, the EGR value and this "under-pipe" are the only 2 parts you need to remove, ist all very self explanatory from there since you will see the blanking plate can only really go one place and is a perfect fit.

Only thing of note about the EGR delete pipe is that the kit linked above from Darkside comes with a choice of 2 optional thumb bolts, these are to install in a custom hole in the delete pipe its self (you will see it when you look for it). One is just a small solid nut to block the hole, the other is a long hollow fitting which still leave a hole. the Long version with the hole is for if you want to install a Boost Gauge, Assuming you don't have a Boost Gauge then just use the small solid nut in order to block the hole.

Other than that you will need to just make one more mod to the 90 degree rubber/silicon boost pipe that connects to the EGR value, and thats using a hacksaw to remove the metal fitting that connects the pipe to the EGR value, you need not cut the pipe its self to achieve this, just saw the metal with a hacksaw creating a slit down one side, after that you can peel the outer rim of the metal off and then force the fitting away from the pipe, use the jubilee clip that comes with the kit to them attach the pipe to the new EGR delete pipe

Then just one last think, use screws or bolts to block off the vacuum pipes that where attached to the EGR value, this part is explained well in the video link posted above.

Here is a picture of the finished job wich may help.

As for mapping out the light, I never faced this problem, but this maybe due to the fact that my car is already has a custom performance remap, am not sure but I had no warning light issues after the job, cant say for sure if a unmapped car will occur a warning light.

That is a very good post indeed helped me out alot. Ordering the allard egr delete kit tonight as darkside is out of stock. Will be doing the delete cleaning out all the pipes removing the inlet and cleaning that out bit of Mr muscle oven cleaner in the turbo is what been told to clean that theb will be doin the elephant mod... then hopefully shel be alot bettet :-D

Personally I'd clean the EGR then do the elephant mod.

Q. Since the ECU is leaning off the fuel mixture while EGR is taking place how can this scenario possibly be of any benefit?

A. It can't, it's marketing nonsense with no factual basis in Engineering theory at all.

When i did both mods. But also cleaned out all my pipes. my car feels more responsive. Extra 6mpg on long runs. Just all round better tbh

Good informative post. Is anybody running the Darkside Developments EGR delete for a BLT engined car? Do you need to order the gasket as mentioned above also for this kit?

As I'm looking to buy the above kit for when my new turbo goes on.

I also know that I will need to buy the EGR cooler delete pipe also.

I did the same with cleaning out the intake manifold, can tell you now, it took more than just a little Mr Muscle to get that sucker shiny, I went through 4 cans of Mr Muscle, and an entire bottle of that super toxic stuff that you tip down blocked drains or blocked toilets to dissolve whatever comes in its path.

What I did was cap the ends of the inlet manifold off with plastic bags and fill it up with that drain unblocker stuff in its pure state, (cant remember what brand, just know that I picked it up from pound saver when I went to score a few more cans of Mr Muscle), then I left it overnight, then next day got the power hose out and sprayed it out, that was after going though a couple of cans of Mr Muscle already, but can tell you know that the drain unblocker stuff had the biggest impact of all and only after that I could actually start to see a clean surface inside the inlet manifold.

After that another can of Mr Muscle and the thing looked as good as new, I had planned to do the job in one day, getting the intake manifold to the standard I wanted was the only part that held me back, but well worth doing, so if I was you I would plan ahead and get yourself over to pound saver to find such a product and insure you have at least a few hours to spare to just giving that drain unblocker stuff time to work its magic

To Answer the question about the Gasket, the VW dealer near where I live had that Gasket in stock, I would not say its essential since you could use the old gasket, but I would highly recommend getting a new one.

And as for the comment about "It can't, it's marketing nonsense with no factual basis in Engineering theory at all", well what is a fact of engineering theory is that my EGR valve will never p155 out oil all over my engine ever again.

The egr doesn't put oil into the engine?

When I cleaned out my manifold I found out that boots own caustic soda made the biggest impact and dissolved the tar really easily.

I bought some generic gel drain cleaning stuff but that took ages.

Caustic soda is definitely the best.

Cheers for the heads up lads. I will have to go gdt me some stuff this weekend ready then haha :-D. Isit defo worth doing the elepehant mod and egr delete once cleaned out all the piped and inlet etc

...well what is a fact of engineering theory is that my EGR valve will never p155 out oil all over my engine ever again.

That's not what it does, it recirculates unburnt fuel mixture and exhaust gas back through the engine to be burnt more completely during lean cruise.

This is why the elephant mod exists, the tar in the manifold consists of two separate components; oil vapour from the engine breather and soot from the EGR.

if you do the elephant mod and clean your manifold properly, the EGR system can be left in place doing it's job; lowering your mean EGT, saving you fuel and reducing wasteful emissions. There is simply no need to delete it at all.

Now, those are facts.

Not quite, you still get quite a bit of oil seepage from oil getting past the turbo seals.

I'd delete the egr either way, exhaust gases being forced into the cylinders means less fresh air into it too which equates to poorer mpg and power.

Egr decreases emissions but lowers mpg (I'm an automotive engineering 3rd year student doing my final year project on the effects an egr valve on a diesel engine)

The elephant mod is a bodge in my eyes, ask anyone that rides a motorbike what they think of you dropping oil from a open breather onto the road surface!!!! :@

How have you found your car without the anti-shudder valve fitted?

Only thing that worries me about fitting a EGR delete, don't want the car to sound like a old Sherpa van when you turn the engine off!!!! :giggle:

Oh boy, two in a row and only three lines actually written.

Wrong on two counts, red ink all over your final year paper for these two massive misconceptions.

Go ask your tutor please and stop guessing.
