Cam belt change again?.

Featured Replies

In 2009 had first cambelt change without pump mileage then 35000m. Yesterday told its time again for cam and pump renew. Now since 2009 and today have only done 18000 miles and when I said this to dealer they replied its not mileage but years ,so would appreciate your comments regarding this.As said 53000 miles and so far the ERG valve and maybe turbo if the booster valve cannot be cleaned sufficient plus a rad' and battery all since 2005.I had a Ford Cortina which had done 100000+miles in 13 years and that had a cambelt go (£20) fitted on roadside and battery plus a rad'.Skoda it seems like owning a money pit.

They're right.

It's 60,000 miles OR 4 years whichever comes first.

Our car has also had a cambelt done even with 30,000 on the clock now.

The 4year limit is a vag wide thing. SWMBO pd Seat has the same 'rule' I think they also take the number of engine start stops into consideration as due to the way engines work they will always come to stop in the same few places, which then means the initial strain taken by the cam belt as it turns the cams and valves etc from a standstill when the crank turns initially on the starter is always placed on the same few teeth on the cambelt. The £300 or so to replace the belt and water pump is cheaper than a broken engine

Thanks for comments, have booked it in £698 for major service /cam belt and pump.

How did they arrive at the £698?

Cambelt - £349

Waterpump - £100

Major Service - £249

Total - £698

These prices are as per Skoda's 'National Fixed Pricing Policy'...

Servicing: http://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/service-and-maintenance/national-pricing/servicing

Maintenance: http://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/service-and-maintenance/national-pricing/maintenance

If this is with a main dealer I'd be pushing for a further discount.

Assuming the first cambelt was done at the four year mark in 2009 that makes your Octavia a very early 2005 model?

£700 for a major service on a £3-4K car is a big chunk of cash!

June 2005

I can't help thinking that a cam belt change every four years is a bit like tigers' poo.  If you scatter that around the garden you NEVER have any trouble with elephants.  Can you risk not doing it?

I have these prices from the Newton Abbot dealers website:

Cambelt  319

80k service  198

aircon 79

brakefluid change  59

total 596

You missed the waterpump, that's an extra £100.
