Help choosing uprated Fabia I speakers?

Featured Replies

The speakers in my mk1 vrs are well intruely shot so i was looking to replace them but when it comes to speakers, subs and amps i am a complete novice. I don't know the first place to look.

First of all will i need an amp?

I'm not looking to add a sub or anything so was thinking i would be fine without one.

Secondly what speakers should i be getting?

Component or coaxial?

Cheers in advance

Firstly, Do you have mids in the doors and tweeters seperately?

If you do then you will need components.

If you go without an amp and use the oem headunit you will need to use components which are designed to be run off little power. Your headunit will only have about 10 watts per side.

I'd recommend putting some effort into the installation of the speakers too. This can make the world of difference. A good wooden baffle securely and solidly attached to the door (use the holes where the rivets are currently).

Sound deadening will also help. This will make the doors more solid and stop them vibrating. The more solid you can make your mounting point the better midbass response you will get.

What kind of budget are you looking to spend on the speakers? I will say its very difficult to match the oem speakers in modern cars at low volumes with unamplified aftermarket speakers unless you spend a decent amount of cash on install and the speakers them selves. Some £30 speakers will not improve things at all, thats for sure

I have currently got mids and tweeters separately, so components it is then. I've also got an upgraded headunit. I've not really got a budget bud. I'm willing to spend as much as is necessary within reason.

What about rear speakers bud or should I just disconnect them?

Also what about speaker cable?

Cheers

rear speakers, i'd leave the oem ones in. If you like it like that leave it, if not try disconnecting them and see how it sounds.

I personaly would say disconnect them

Cable wise any 14-16awg speaker cable will be fine. You can get it pretty cheap off ebay

If you have a look at caraudiodirect.co.uk , most of the sets in that price range are good. Only ones I wouldnt recomend are any of the vibe range

Hi, there are a few thing's you can do.

Update your head unit if you haven't already as this can make most normal speakers sound much better.

Now as for the speaker upgrade's that come's down to how much you want to spend at the bottom end of the market you can

get something like this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BOSS-500W-TOTAL-2WAY-6-5-INCH-16-5cm-CAR-DOOR-SHELF-COAXIAL-SPEAKERS-RED-PAIR/190877967552?_trksid=p2045573.m2102&_trkparms=aid%3D555003%26algo%3DPW.CAT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D16581%26meid%3D2710812707052240198%26pid%3D100034%26prg%3D7839%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26

there not bad and will give you better sound over the stock ones but they ain't the best but for £20 for front there not bad, all so take note that the back one's are a size & you will all so need a speaker adaptor  kit so they fit to the door.

or you can get a mid/high range  speaker set like the ones below.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skoda-Fabia-Front-Door-Speakers-Pioneer-car-speakers-adapter-rings-pods-240W-/160877644763?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item25750e0bdb

and near the top end with very good sound but they ain't cheap

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JL-Audio-TR650-CXI-6-5-16cm-225-watt-2-way-Car-Van-Door-JL-Speakers-/251295165891?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item3a825bedc3

now that's it for speakers

Now as far as subwoofers go , i run a twin 12" Fli with built in amp and a sony head unit and that's it i have left the door speakers alone for now as with the sub and headunit it is REALLY loud i can't even put it up full, but the down side is no boot  .

all tho if you like bass you can get one a under seat subwoofer

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-Face-8-Active-Underseat-Under-Seat-Car-Sub-Box-Subwoofer-And-Amplifier-/230784430645?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item35bbd2f235

all you need to do is wire it up.

hope this helps a bit if you need to know anything msg me if you want to see mind il do a video.

chap, all those speakers are low end. None of which i'd recomend, especially anything with BOSS written on it.

true but i was giving a low end market with the boss's i would not run them in my car.

JL audio are very good speakers one of the best on the market next to stuff like hifonics , Ground Zero ( the good stuff ).

but it's all down to what you are going for over all, and yes a component would be better than a coaxial but then that comes down to what you got to spend as you will know.

there is 3 point's you need to think of

1. Does it sound good to you

2. Does it fit your vehicle

3. Does it fit your budget

I have purchased the above hertz speakers and ground zero amp. Just need to buy some speaker cable and an amp fitting kit and I'm good to go.

Cheers for the post powermad but I already have an uprated headunit and the speakers are knackered and thats why I'm upgrading them.

Remember chap, when fitting them make sure you take your time and dont badge anything. As i've said, a good solid baffle for the mids.

Did you say you were gonna pick up some deadening at all?

The fabia's do have quite solid doors anyway but you may get some rattles from the more powerful midbass lol

thanks for the reminder bud completely forgot about the sound deadening. haven't ordered any baffles cause i don't know what thickness i need yet.

Regards baffles. Id make them. You will need 18mm mdf. Go to any b&q with a cutting saw and see if they have any off cuts of 18mm for cheap

If those are the 165.5s you should have plenty of room to work with.

IMO you want them just clearing the glazing bar behind the woofer, not too far forwards. Mine pretty much hit the door card using Golf MK4 adapters. Hence, I'd go for well waterproofed MDF rings if doign it again.

Amp can go under the passenger seat, mounted to the seat subframe or even secured to the floor. There's already a carpet cut there for the OEM CD changer.

the mdf rings wont get wet. mdf is very porus so you'd have to do a lot to make them water proof.

You can buy a cover which goes over the back of the speaker to help stop it getting too wet. Search "skinz 3 step"
