exhaust choice?

Featured Replies

Have been considering my exhaust options for a while now as really do think the vrs is missing a sportier exhaust note (not after any power here).

Had originally thought about just removing centre silencer, but seeing as would need to declare that on insurance thought I may as well do it proper and get a system ;-)

Milltek represents big initial outlay, but looks good and with centre deletion as well could be a good solution, especially as would get some money back when returning to stock one day.

Other option is to get a stainless cat back system made up by decent local exhaust fabricator which would be approx 250notes. Still be worth some resale in future but not as much as big name brand.

If going bespoke then not sure if would go for big twin chrome pipes like milltek or to go a little mk1-esque and get a 4x6 oval which would fill the bumper cut out just right like on the old Leon cupra.

Any thoughts on these options or choice of custom tips would be appreciated as keep struggling to make a decision!!

Cheers

Andy

Braaaaaaaarp!

Not really my thing, I prefer stealth power over noise.

However the world would be dull if we all thought the same.

For me I would go twin pipe as I prefer the look, I would go for a good reputable bespoke catback where you can tell them exactly what noise you want.

It's not bricks and mortar so buy for your enjoyment not future resale. However lack of modded mk2's out there seems to mean good second hand pricing on most things.

Just have the middle box removed, there are a few threads on here about it, improves the sound just enough.

Just jumping on board for advice here.... Would removing the centre box on the 1.2 Monte give a better note, well any sound at all?

I would guess so.

I haven't done or heard it for myself, but the blokes on the Aussie VW forum are removing the rear muffler on their 1.2 77kw Polos (I'm not exactly sure what that is in BHP, but I'm thinking it's just over 100).

it could create a lot of drone inside the cabin at certain revs, I had the Miltek non-res(no centre box) on my Octy and the drone was terrible esp. when on the motorway. which was a shame as it sounded great when just pootling around but jading on motorway journeys.

+1, it's all fun and games when having, well, fun and games.

But sometimes a car is just a mode of transport, I get narked at tyre drone and wind noise on a long motorway journey, I'd want to top myself if I had a droning booming exhaust to deal with too.

Again, each to their own.

Cheers for the comments so far. I am also keen to avoid drone, am hoping that with the turbo and cat providing a level of silencing that whatever I decide to do will be a little tastier on the ear whilst not being too intrusive.

Very true about each to their own, a key reason why I enjoy forums for whatever car I have to see what other people like to do. Can't beat a nice exhaust note though to keep a red-blooded male happy ;-)
