2008 Scout cutting out

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2008 Scout 140 with a BMM engine. Have had it for over two years with very few problems. It has done 263K Kms.

About two weeks ago it started cutting out. There is no loss of power, beforehand, and there are no warning lights. The engine simply stops and the dash goes dead. Initially it would reset after about 20 seconds (the dash lights would come on and the engine could be restarted). Now it can take up to 10 minutes to reset.

There were a couple of other anomalies which may or may not have been in some way related,

1 : there was a light bulb warning light, and the display said the front right main beam was gone, but the bulb was still working. I replaced the bulb and the warning light went out, but I noticed the old bulb was scorched around the base. I've never seen this before on a bulb.

2 : the day before the problem started, the car had only gone 1 Km when the engine overheating symbol appeared on the MFD. I checked over the engine and everything was as it should be. When I restarted the engine the warning had gone and didn't come back.

Can anyone suggest any potential solutions ?

Cheers

Its clearly an electrical issue, potentially caused by the duff bulb.

The easiest way to diagnose the issue will be to get the car scanned by someone with VCDS or (worst case) a dealer.

The fault code should then lead you to the damaged wire, connector, sensor or controller etc.

Thanks Man, I've been toying with the idea of buying a VCDS unit myself. Is there a reasonable unit available that does more than just read codes ?

Problem solved. Turned out we had an overheating relay, which was switching off as it got too hot. It was relay 416. Below the steering, in the centre of the relay box. Cost about €12 to replace but about €a-bit-more to find.

Great result, thanks for updating the thread!

That must have taken some finding, sounds like you have a good mechanic there..?
