DSG,beware the future?

Featured Replies

Just a comment I read in today's Autocar mag.The article was a review of used Audi S3s and the motor trade Audi specialist commenting said he would not buy a DSG fitted example without a warranty.

The reason he gave was that he had not found anyone who was capable of repairing this box and new ones cost £6k.

Now I know the Fabia DSG box is different but perhaps the non-repairability issue still arises.Personally I bought the 5 year factory warranty and intend to change before it expires, but it's something to think carefully about for anyone looking at a 3 year old vRS just out of warranty.

That Audi Specialist must not be looking very hard.

My local Automatic Transmission Specialist fixes a few, sent to him by Dealerships, he opens the Sealed for life ones and does the necessary & that is them fixed.

Parts readily available.

It does go to show often that Official Dealership Technicians can be lacking is Skills or Specialist Technicians doing things like Autoboxes.

If VAG are building disposable and unrepairable Gearboxes, then they should be telling the public that at point of purchase.

Or in every country put the 100,000 mile Warranty on them all, or 'Whole life' if Being Dealer Serviced, on the boxes requiring Servicing.

Boxes that do not need servicing or oil changes should automatically have a Whole Life Warranty.

I am looking forward to trying the DSG reportedly going into the New Passat first. 11 speed.

If we all worried about such things there would be no call for auto gearboxes at all as residuals would be rock bottom.

I look at it this way. The DSG is the best gearbox I have had the privilege of driving in a very long driving career.

Does it break? Yes of course it does. Is it unreliable? most certainly not. Most will get hundreds of thousands of trouble free miles but you can bet you will only ever hear of the few that fail early.

Perhaps we should all just buy cars within warranty, great if we have the money but the absolute truth is most people simply can't afford to and if we all worried about a gearbox failure or whether a piston might shove it,s head through the block or an ECU fail etc., we may as well just take the bus.

Sorry for the rant, I just wish people would enjoy their cars. This old wives tail of 'don't buy a second hand car with an Auto Box' has been around since the 1950's. :wall:

If they can be repaired, that's ok and illustrates that you should never believe all you see in print.

On the other hand a dsg box is rather different to the the old torque converter boxes which I agree are almost totally reliable, especially the Merc ones, up to 200K miles and more, but new technology always brings fears about durability, sometimes rightly so.

IMO it always makes sense to question every cars future reliability...otherwise many more would be running TVRs as daily drivers, and ,yes, unlike most Skoda owners I have owned two of those beasts!!
