60.000 km service (aprox 37000 miles) - Gearoil change?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can tell me if I will need a gearoil change at 60k km service?

Gearbox oil? No, that's certainly not on the standard service schedule for that mileage, for a manual gearbox.

Skoda usually indicate that the gearbox is 'sealed for life'. However I was noticing stiff gear changes when cold, so I had the gearbox oil changed at around 80k miles and noticed a dramatic improvement.

I would say you can easily leave it for the same mileage again, and perhaps change around 120k KM. I'd only change it if you were noticing stiff gearchanges or that the shift between gears wasn't as smooth.

Only the 6 speed DSG needs an oil change at 40k miles.

Good point; was obviously referring to a manual gearbox. Have edited the above :)

Both my octavias started to get notchy and obstructive at around 60,000 miles.  A change of oil improved both no end.

There is no scheduled oil change for a manual gearbox in either of the owners manuals I have.  Don't know if all current VAG gearboxes are the same.

I too changed the gearbox oil on our 40,000 mile, 5 year old manual Scout.

Gear changes were a little notchy and it improved quite considerably.

Local main dealer charged £60.

I got mine done recently (petrol vrs) @ 58k as the gear changes were a bit notchy as well. I'd recommend doing it for any manual around this sort of mileage :)

If you are doing it yourself check the filler bung can be undone before draining it, On our Mk1 we nearly had a very embarrassing moment, oil out but the in bung wouldn't move

Would like to do this. Is DIY easy? Any guide etc ?.

I have read elsewhere that the gearbox in the Octavia (at least on mine) is tilted from the original design angle for the figment of the gearbox. So if you drain the oil the proper refill level is actually ABOVE the level of the top up bung. You would not be able to put enough back in.

The VAG approved method is drain off the circa 1.9 litres of oil via the bottom plug then put back exactly the same amount of new oil back into the gearbox through the reverse light switch hole.

Your vehicle may very well be different but it would be a huge "gotcha" if it wasn't.

There are online workshop manuals here which should give all the relevant info:
