ATD timing belt help

Featured Replies

So after fitting many timing belts, including both my vrs's and ibiza, BLT engine and ASZ engine codes.... It's now time for my ATD engine one to be changed...

But I've hit a problem!

My ATD engine has a different tensioner, one I've never used before, it has a cylinder type thing with a piston, held on with two ten mil bolts and the tension is locked down with a bar rather than a pin.

If you've fitted one before you will know what I mean. I have the proper tools to use it from an Audi one which was similar I guess.

The question, How do I apply the tension?

I pulled the pin out which put tension on the belt which I was happy with... Until I tried different tensions with the correct tool (the bar with two pins in which go into the tensioner) which has improved it but I don't know which way to push/pull and how far as it has no marks etc..

hang on I'll see if I can put a pic up for you mate

Thanks, I checked auto data in my office and have that exact page but was still a little unsure.

Now I'm sitting in the house reading it again, it looks abit more clear, was hoping somebody that had changed one of these belts and used those tensioner a could give me there experience but never mind.

Thank you for posting and helping :)

You basically turn the tensioner until the specific gap is between the tensioner and the piston body, basically setting the preload on the piston

Just seems strange to leave a 4mm gap between the tensioner pully and the tensioner itself....

not the tensioner itself the body, the piston rod is the tensioner mate I could have worded that a bit better lol basically you compress the rod with the tensioner untill it has 4mm gap there on the pic

Well it's fitted now anyway, don't know how long it will last or not...

I've taken a few pictures to show you and see what you think.

I was also a little confused that even when fully compressed and with the peg in, it was about 5mm so letting the peg out and taking some pressure off could only make things worse?

I'll post pics tomorrow, I'm knackard at the minute, three late shifts in a row working on this car...
