How smooth should my 1.6 TDI be ?

Featured Replies

I would like to know how other cars behave.  Where I live I often get involved in what I call 5 mile trickles.

For five miles for example the traffic trickles along at walking pace with exciting bursts of speed up to at least 10 mph.

It's no problem unless you are in a hurry... you just leave it in first and adjust speed by tiny inputs on the throttle. I hardly ever touch the brakes for example.

When I transition to throttle on to throttle off ---and I dohave a wonderfully delicate right foot ---the whole car has a shudder a very small stutter that all passengers feel especially me with the wheel and throttle under my hands and foot.

It does not feel right or very pleasant.   But it may be normal.

It also does it at speed.  Fifty mph slow traffic ahead lift off to coast in gear --shudder.  Traffic speeds up throttle re-applied ---shudder.

I'm beginning to dislike it a lot.   But it may be normal.  I think my engine would be a lot happier with a DSG.

Any views please.

Mine doesn't seem to behave like that.  Take it back tell them

Never tried that

Outcome ---if anyone is interested.

Car went in.  Below in very brief is what was said.

Told by Service receptionist that Engineer said shudder on power on/power off and vice versa is normal.

I said "Rubbish"

They said "Anyway it is cured"

I said "why have you cured it if it is normal."

They said (I think!!)  "It is normal to your engine management software  -- so we have removed it and installed the latest updated version"

And also said  "We have sent your old software to Skoda for them to look at "  Pardon ??!!??

Anyway car is transformed.  smooth as silk. Any tiny change in throttle pressure no longer startles the engine as it did before.

Result!!!  But what the hell most of the conversation was about is a puzzle.  But I enjoyed my trip into Alice's Wonderland.

Just need to see if it returns!!!

Anyone heard anything like that ??

Classic... "It's normal so we've fixed it for you".

How come you've 'fixed' it if it was normal!

I had a 1.6 CR 105 hire care for several weeks. Was very smooth under those conditions you mentioned so was definitely a fault.

Glad it's sorted at least!

Phil

Completely brilliant conversation. They obviously hope you just don't hear the words coming out of their mouths, rather that you leave somewhat mollified. Or at least sufficiently bamboozled so that you'll just quietly go away.

Very pleased you got the result!

They said (I think!!)  "It is normal to your engine management software  -- so we have removed it and installed the latest updated version"

Unreal.

Glad you've got it sorted.

Has there been any change in behaviour of your engine braking in to roundabouts since the 'fix'?

It is quite normal for them to issue software updates to an engine to improve driveability/economy which is why it's good to use an authorised dealer for your first few years use at least.

Anyway, glad that it seems to have improved things for you.

Glad you got it sorted, it does seem strange though.  I also found out when mine went to dealers it also had been recalled for a sortware update, but no idea waht it was for.

If anyone is interested a further report.

My car has really been reformed by the new software..

Now I can engage first gear let the clutch in and trickle on tick-over--just like my Octavia 1.9 TDI.did

This is important to me when I park in a nearby underground car park that requires steering wheel twirling at Olympic sport level to get in and out.   Before it just seemed that it was in gear three with the car  tugging to get a move on.  It had to be restrained by foot brake or clutch slip..

Also I can approach a roundabout and decelerate in gear far longer and get closer to the roundabout to a slower speed before needing to change down.  Non of that stupid willful tugging that I had before.  It is now a normal car.  Brilliant.

Why the hell did it leave the factory so badly set up?  Carelessness or stupidity? Now they seem to carrying out an unannounced recall and update car by car as they get their hands on them. Sneaky

In case one person is interested in this --further info.

I have been experimenting since the software was updated.

I thought that the strange and unpleasant and (IMO) dangerous "tugging" the car did if it thought I was in the wrong gear on approach to roundabouts had been reduced by the new software.

I was wrong.  It seems to have been completely eliminated. Brilliant Brilliant and terrific.  The car is now a delight compared with before.

See your local dealer for new software ASAP is my advice if your car thinks it knows more about driving than you do.

My parents have the same issue with a 2013 fabia 1.6 TD which dealer as I would like to see what they did.

Actually what happened was a bit odd.    I explained the stumbling and tugging to the triage person and he looked a bit doubtful or sceptical and gave me a slot for a week's time.

One of the Owner/Directors came over to say hello and she asked so I told her about the car and showed her my appointment card.

She developed a very dangerous frown shook her head impatiently and spoke to the man who then said  "I've changed my mind bring it in   8 AM tomorrow"  More like he had his mind changed for him. I got the feeling she knew all about it somehow.

They told me they removed the old software and installed new stuff. No version numbers code numbers or anything mentioned and nothing on the paperwork.

It has transformed the car.

Dealer is I'm sorry to say in Spain Costa Blanca (where it is blooming cold at present)

Best of luck to your Mum and Dad

Veery interesting... My fabia does the same. Back to the dealers then!

Not posted in "Rapid" section before...so, be gentle Mildred ........  :-)

I've been given a loan diesel Rapid today by my dealer as the Yeti is in for a couple of days. (It's a DSG and they're changing the clutch pack due to judder). I don't know what engine it is or what spec.  There's no paperwork in the car but it's done 1000 miles and is a 63 reg.

Two things I've noticed are:

When I slow down in anticipation of a stop (at traffic lights for example) I am aware that as the car is rolling slowly and doing about 5mph and is getting to the point where I'll think about de-clutching....the rpm is a definite 900rpm and as a result it is trying to keep the car moving forward and requires more braking than I've ever had to do in any previous car...and I need to dip the clutch a little earlier than I would have expected in order to maintain good control and a smooth stop.  Then, when we've stopped, the rpm will stay at 900 rpm for a few seconds - then it'll drop down to 750rpm (as I would have expected throughout the manouevre). It does this every time I come to a stop.

The other thing I'm very aware of is the car (not the engine) is noisier than I would have expected.  I can accept the sound of the diesel engine...the 1.2 in my Yeti is definitely quieter, but maybe it would be as it's petrol....but that's not the issue.  Both and the Mrs. can hear, and almost feel, a booming sensation throughout the car.  It does it all the time we're at 30mph or over - and does it a lot when going over bumps and road imperfections. I can almost feel it in my ear drums as a sort of pressure/booming/resonance and is quite pronounced.  The car is, of course, different from a Yeti but I wasn't expecting it to be substantially less pleasant to drive  due to, what seems like, a lack of refinement and quiet running.

I'm hoping it's this particular car and not a general thing.  Obviously it's not a problem as I'll give it back in a couple of days, but I would be pleased to hear from owners of Rapids to see whether theses two points are "normal" or not.

Thanks.

Your post gives me the impression you have not read the thread.

The "tugging" as I called it where the car surged forward on approach to roundabouts or the end of tailbacks when you eased of the brakes, having brought the speed to a point where a gear change down was appropriate, was not only very unpleasant but in my view dangerous.

The installation of new software (did you read that above?) has very nearly eliminated it. It still tugs but not as strongly and you can get down to a much slower speed before it happens.  I can live with it now I think.

It is normal for the revs to stay at 1000 for a second or two before dropping to 750 when completely stationary.  Any tiny forward motion will be sensed by the ABS system the revs will rise and this is to avoid stall on lift off and get everything "primed" for travel.  Odd but does not bother me .  Better this than stop and Go or whatever it is called.

My car does not boom. In fact on motorways for example it is quieter than my much loved 1.9 TDI BJB Octavia. I wish I had not changed it.

But far worse on my car was the very unpleasant stutter or stumble at every transition to or from power on /power off.   Every tiny adjustment in the pressure on the accelerator seemed to startle the engine.  This shudder was felt by passengers but much more by me.  Frankly it was vile and if it still did it it would be the centre of a damn big row with the dealer. And probably sold as a nasty experience with my last ever VW product.

Like I said in one of my posts above why the hell did VW let such a lousy engine setup out of the factory.  What the hell were they thinking of.  I seem to be not alone.  One of my posts above gives a hint that they know all about it and deal with cars one by one.  I suppose they do not want to add to the 1.25 million cars already on recall.

And the pressures in my tyres on collection nearly shook the car to pieces they were so high.  Overall a pretty nasty experience with a car that does indeed seem crude cheap unrefined and not fully developed.  I feel I've been had. Never again.

I'll tell you what, HopeImRight, I'm sorry I caused you to expend your time replying to me.

Clearly my enquiry doesn't belong in this thread.

And clearly I'm best off getting back to theYeti section as I don't feel especially welcome here, if your post is anything to go by.

My apologies.  I won't trouble you again,

.....and He asked you so nicely to be gentle. :giggle:

I would if I were you mate. The Yeti forum seems nice and friendly.

my much loved 1.9 TDI BJB Octavia. I wish I had not changed it.

So do I.

And It's a piece of advice I've chosen to throw away.

In my original enquiry here I begged the indulgence of the panel with a light hearted opening introduction.  And you piped in with a reply which, in your words, was.....unnecessary confrontational and unfriendly.

By the way, you have capital letters where you should have lower case and lower case where you should have capitals.  And there's an apostrophe missing from your username

(Well, you did say feel free to comment how I like)  :giggle:

@Oldstan.

What have you stuck your nose in for ?

This may be difficult for you to grasp but usually people reply to the previous post.  So was it yours?

Thought not.
