Gearbox Gone! Help, any other gearboxes can put in?

Featured Replies

Hi lads,

Gearbox in my Skoda VRS 1.8t is broken, it seems impossible to find a second hand gearbox from vrs, because there are not that much of them in my area. Gearbox from different octavia won't work as I know, or maybe Im wrong. because of different ratios. So if anyone can help me what to do? Recondition is very very expensive, so if anyone was dealing with vrs gearboxes, please help. Thank you

Thank you mate! So its 02j, will it be 100% fitment to original vRS gearbox? Will she work ok like the original one??

100 % mate as my diff went and i had to change my box lol just make sure it is a 02J transmission box you will be fine

dont some 02j boxes have different ratios? i thought vrs gearboxes had longer ratios than the others

There's a different ratio set for just about every engine power output + gearbox combo

The ratio setup you'll find on a 150ps car will normally be slightly lower than the 180ps cars

And what will happen if I put in gearbox from 150ps to my 180 vRS?

It just means that you might not be able to travel at motorway speeds in 2nd gear anymore  ....

Seriously though, You will just be doing different RPM for the equivalent speed.

so say in 5th at 70mph, a different gearbox could mean that your engine is doing 3200 RPM instead of 3000RPM etc. depends on the exact ratios.

The box will not be any weaker.

First and second gears are very long in our cars anyway so it will only make a difference if you'd miss that or are very fussy about fuel economy.

Now I see, thnks for explanation. Is there any other cars that have 02j 180hp gearbox on them? Just love a long go on 2nd gear   dont want to loos that with 150hp geabox. Is there anything?? :whew:

As far as I know, the other front wheel drive 180bhp+ cars had 6 speed boxes. Not sure about pre cupra leons?

Someone on here should know but there seem to be a good few vrs boxes around too.
