Dusty Garage Floors...

Featured Replies

I recently DIY built my own garage, this being the biggest DIY project ever and with little building experience (other than basically being a laborer for my Dad in my teens), I did pretty well (its up and doesn't leak!), BUT my biggest issue was the floor. Basically when I did it I played with it too much leading to a weak/dusty surface. I searched around for solutions and decided some 'cementone' from Wickes. I followed the instructions and it made an improvement but it still wasn't good enough. So I decided I'd buy some rubber mats to cover the lot, giving me a nicer surface to work on. Before laying the tiles I had a clear out... still had around 10L of this cementone left, so decided instead of pouring it down the drain I'd throw it on the floor neat just to get rid of it. Came back a few days later to lay the tiles, expecting it to have made little difference... but it did! The surface is now solid and feels like its been sealed. It was too late to send the tiles back as I'd opened them all up... but lesson learnt... I could have saved my self a few quid by buying another 25L of cementone, ignoring the instructions and throwing it on neat.

Nice result!

Could do with some garage tiles, so if you want them going to use, give me a shout.

I put them down anyway, looks quite good and will be nicer to work on than a cold floor. If they turn out to be crap at least I know the solution now.

Sounds good. What type of tile did you go for? Got a link to any info?

Keep meaning to look into options.

Search for 'Industrial Garage Gym Floor tiles' sold by Easimat / Far East Trading.

?Can't really vouch for their durability for another few years obviously, but seem pretty tough! Came in around £180 for my floor area with a few spares. I will be using boards to spread the load of jacks/stands though.

Secondhand carpet tiles do the trick nice and warm, cheap, and easy to replace knackered ones, obtained from most commercial offices when they change upgrade.

Painting my garage floor stopped the dust.

While you're at it paint the ceiling & walls as well = even less dust.  My neighbour has skimmed the walls, coving and skirting boards fitted as well.
