Yesterday two things happened.

1- the good. I spend an hour going round the car with a length of sticky backed velcro. Using it one sided in all the areas where there seemed to be a rattle in the car on cold mornings.

This morning...success. Completely rattle free on the inside of the car

2 - the bad, I've known the drivers side rear brake stone guard was coming loose for a little while. Yesterday it sounded like I was towing a bin lid around with me.

Had a look under the car last night after finding the prop stands I've never used before. The guard has totally rotted/worn away around the the bolts. So now there are three holes bigger than the bolts which the whole dinner plate of metal can clang around on or lean on the disk.

I've squished in some quicksteel putty around the bolts to try to hold it in place a little and it does seem to have worked for now.

Checking here  there apparently you need to split the hub to replace it, and therefore a new hub (£$£). But maybe I don't need it and the purchase of a Dremel type tool might be in order.

Car due a service shortly anyway.

Does anyone run without these things?

Car is 6yr old probably keeping another couple since otherwise it's running well.

Ok, it's an A4 rather than an A5, but my Octy has never had front splashguards.

Similarly, my ZX never had them.

Had a similar problem with one of my rear guards.

So just removed them both before they did rust completely and start to rattle like a bin lid in the wind.

On my 07 VRS, its simple caliper and disc of and then remove the bolts holding them on. Refit disc and caliper sorted.

All they do is reduce the amount of road debris gaining access to the brakes.

A good pair of tin snips and cut it off.

When you are next having new rear discs fitted buy a pair of the guards (not expensive) and refit. Or just leave them off.

Discs have only been on for 20k so quite a while before they'll be changed.

Tin snips or Dremel then!
