Flat battery and jump starting proving tricky..

Featured Replies

My BMW has a flat battery and I've tried jump starting with the Kia but all I get is clicking, so I guess there isn't enough juice to get her started. The car is parked in a storage yard in the middle of nowhere so there is no power to charge the battery. I could take the battery out and take it home but is there anything else? Is there anyone local to me that could come and give me a hand with a bigger battery? Also, the car is parked against a fence and the battery is in the boot. I've had to join 2 sets of leads together to reach the battery in the bmw. They are quite old but I'm getting power as the central locking works etc until I disconnect. Could this be why it's not working?

I've tried running the kia at 1800rpm for 20mins with the leads connected but still not enough juice.

use the jump leads under the bonnet there are points to connect to on the block

like this? also just use the one set of leads, if this doesn't do it then chances are your battery has had it

can you borrow a jump start pack?

Appearently the packs are too low power for the 4.4l v8 under the bonnet :( I'm going to give the points under the bonnet a whirl!!

diy packs def aren't likely to crank it, but a proper 'mechanic' pack would do it, my mate has a snap on one, it would literally start a tank!

any mechanic mates you can ask?

failing that breakdown cover?

Friend had a similar problem. Car started fine with a decent set of jump leads.

Different times and different ECU's easily fried on modern vehicles.

You put the leads on the car to be started with the other car running, and let the car settle (balance) for a few minutes, before cranking.

A Booster Pack is much safer IMO.

Thats from years of using jump leads, but cars becoming more of a worry, if you get things wrong.

Some cars that have been put on Jump Leads to start, or used to jump can then need Re-set. read the manual,

Steering assist lost for example on a Hyundai, so you need to follow the correct procedure.

This can just be from the Battery being flat, but read the Owners Manual.

Are you a AA or RAC member? they will help.

how are you connecting the leads to the bmw?  Youn need to do positive on good battery to positive on bad battery and negative on good battery to an earth point on the car with the bad battery. if  you connect negative to negative then you simply risk running charge through the dead battery and it not reaching the rest of the car. If the battery is in the boot then i've used the boot latch strker plate a s a   as an earth before

Why not leave the jumps leads on for 15 minutes, with the good car running with no electrical parts switched on. then try to jump the BMW. It could also be the leads you are using, there is some s##t leads out there that do more harm than help.

You want a reasonably large diesel to jump it off. (1.9 TDI upwards).

They derv car's have higher battery capacities and bigger alternators as standard, so that might give you more success.

Personally I'd just buy a new battery, put it in and start the car, then take the old one for disposal.

It's going to be cheaper than getting stranded again. Plus if the old one is that discharged and sealed, it's probably not going to be a happy battery.

As suggested, just leaving a car running and attached, for 15 minutes would probably be a good way to get some charge into the car.

Otherwise if you have the booster pack, charge it, then connect it and let it charge up your car's battery.

Repeat this a few times, over the course of a day and you might find you can start it.
