Heads Up Display (HUD) for you car - for free

Featured Replies

Well it never occurred to me to search for HUD in the Apple app store (or on Android). But I saw this on a website and golly does it work well at night!

(Apologies if this has been covered before)

The image above was taken by my passenger. I had had a courtesy Fabia last week and had it set to green which worked with the Fabia but on the Yeti I later changed it to white to match the white on black dials of the Yeti.

This app above is Awesome HUD app and it is free. It shows your current speed and a rolling compass showing direction. You can set a speed limit too and when you go over that the whole screen pulses a gentle red. There's no ads with this app.

The other one I got that also shows GPS directions is HUDway which is also free - unless you don't want to see ads as you drive and you pay for that.  You "build" a route first and then it shows you a little road with L and R directions (no audio) to your destination.

See this video of the Hudway one in action:

They ONLY work at night though - but the Awesome HUD's speed is a pretty thick line so this was fairly visible on an overcast day but I won't bother in the day with these. Even at night you need to have your phone's brightness up pretty high. So battery life suffers but this can be overcome by powering the phone from the 12V power socket.

Thanks for the Huds up :D

rained off today, mate :(

just downloaded, but should the satelite symbol for "No Signal" always be flashing?  granted, I'm sat at my desk, but 3G is active......just wondered if I'm over-thinking this..........does it only receive a signal when in motion?

There is/was one of these with speed camera locations on. My first big run in the Octy when we got it was me and a mate doing a night time run up to Peebles biking for a weekend. He'd just got a new iPhone and we had that on the dash telling us the speed limit, current speed and where the speed cameras were on the Newcastle > Jedburgh road.

Speedlimit HUD is another

The apps use the builtin GPS receiver, which don't usually work indoors. They don't use 3G at all, only GPS.

The "rays" below the satellite flashes when you DO have a signal.  And when you go into a tunnel the whole satellite "greys" out. If memory serves.

As you can see on my photo I also switched the clock off as that was too glaring top left and the car's clock is fine (for me - since as all SWMBOs know on a Bolero radio equipped car, passengers have NO clock to look at).  So perhaps with a nagging SWMBO, that wants to know the time, this is a useful app to put in front of the passenger...  with the clock enabled of course.   :giggle:

That's what I said to the people saying SWMBO is moaning about the clock...  but no. One and all they bought an eBay clock to stick on the car somewhere for (lazy) SWMBO.
