This evening's mod...

Featured Replies

Bought a blanking plug a while back now, but constant rain has meant I haven't been able to get it fitted! So here we are.... no wiper...

Put a good dollop of black sealant on the back, so shouldn't be leaking any time soon! I'll wait for it to harden, then properly smooth over the outside face with sealant in the slight gap when (or if!) it doesn't rain again any time soon.

Neatly cable tied the wiring and hose up out of the way. I now need to find the feed from the front and disconnect it there just in case I knock the switch. Does anyone know if there's an independent motor for the back washer? I would've thought so. If there is then I'll just disconnect that instead if I can find it!

Now before the haters start, I realise the impracticalities of this mod! However, I don't find it much of an issue and have done this on lots of past cars. It's not like it's a tank! I've done it purely for looks... and it makes the rear end such a nicer place to look at! I didn't fancy a Polo wiper arm, as I think they're horrible - in fact I prefer the standard one over it to be honest.

One thing about this job.... that boot interior panel is an absolute BITCH to get back in place properly!! Had to try it about 6 times, as clips kept falling out just when I thought it was on :-/

Wont hear me complaining, done it ages ago and makes the back look loads better imo :D

Nice little mod, I done the same when my rear washer stopped. Just chucked a bung in and it hasnt leak a few years on so yours with sealant on it should be fine. I'd deffo block or stop the washer somehow because I do knock mine sometimes. As for the rear screen, it's a supermini not a bus, if you can drive a van/bus/lorry with no back window I doubt a dirty back window will cause a issue.

Yo dude im really tempted to do my mk2 with this mod i like it, i know it a marmite mod but it a personal choice .

ive debadged  my rear end  :giggle: and i think dewiping would help. have you got a link to the blanking plug ...is this a glass one.

Joel, Matt, any ideas if there's a separate motor for the rear washer, and where would I find it??!

OCD, here's the link mate: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=291010941413

Not cheap for what they are, but it looks a million times better than a rubber grommet.

Stupid mod imo

Rear wipers are a godsend

My new bmw doesnt have one and it drives me bonkers! I like seeing who's behind me (5-0)

Looks like a tidy job, where did you get the plug from?  I want to remove the wiper off the Golf.  Found it on your ebay link above, I guess they push through from inside and are held with sealant?

Im not sure Alex. I removed the whole unit on the back and blocked the pipe. Tested and it didnt leak.

Jase - use your side mirrors mate :p

I don't see any problem with it. Your screen has to get bloody dirty for you not to see through it. Ok, so it's not ideal if you're trying to eye up a bird through the back windscreen in the rain in traffic ha ha! Plus now it gives me more incentive to keep the car clean!!!

Ok cheers Joel no problem mate. Will have a nosey in the Hayne's manual!

Cheers James - link above takes you to the one I bought fella.

I'm with Jase, didn't realise how much I used it until borrowing my parent's Jetta which doesn't have a rear wiper.

Mine will be staying, although does clean image rear up a little :)

Cheers alex ...i drive a 10 foot unit hooked into a 40 foot trailer so im sure i can do without a rear wiper.

Its more for at night trying to spot whats behind you

Seeing lights in an unmarked cop's grille is handy

Right now with no rear wiper i dont have the foggiest who's following me, i just see blue xenon's and bag myself

Oh ffs thats an insult lol  ....all i will say is "every little helps".

nah man im the real thing...We're the one that **** other drivers off because we are restricted to 40 mph max on an" A" road.

Arrrr...this must be you then

weeklygripe

thats interesting reading it fecks me off that people dont know the highway code and then go into a rant ....il tell ya a wee story ..one of our drivers was doing 40 on an A road he had a build up of traffic behind him so he pulled over to let some traffic past but unknown to him one of the cars was traffic branch they pulled him over and done him for breaking a solid white line ...nice.

Just disconnect the fuse for the motor. It has an independent one. I am going to dewiper my car, so I disconnected the fuse so that it couldn't be used about a week ago, and I don't notice the difference. I never ever used it.

Nice mod.

1 motor does both, it has the polarity reveresed to do the rear one, best is to remove the ns wheelarch liner at the front  and either cut both pipes and tee the reat pipe into the front pipe so either way it goes to the front screen or blank the pipe itself off

^^ Briliant thank you! Just the info I was after :-)

Aye I've got to clean out under the arches and stuff anyway at some point, so I'll sort it out then. Just be careful not to push the switch in the meantime! I doubt I will though, as it's quite a press to get the washers on. Plus you have to hold it!

I should extend the pipe and make it into an intercooler spray ;-) !!

Like the look, hate the implications. Rear gets so crappy as opposed to just wet that it pretty soon becomes unusable if you can't clear it. You're going to get very wet trying to park in bad weather in any open car park.

Mine is looking pretty filthy just now, even so with no wiper and window tints I can still bay park my car at work every morning without trouble.
