Strange noise whilst idling

Featured Replies

Evening Everyone!

I'm completely stuck and before replacing everything and it costing a fortune before Christmas, I was wondering if anyone had any advice... All suggestions welcome.

Well, my car started making a squealing/sqeaking noise when driving (not idle) it sounds like fanbelt, but a lot quieter. It happens for a while when driving then stops, so initially I just thought it was the cold weather.

But it got worse when I opened the bonnet.. It sounds like a tractor!! It's like a dull bearing noise which stopped when I sprayed a bit of WD40 on the air con pulley, but returned when the WD40 dried.

I'm hoping it's not the air con pump :( which I'm worried it is as I rarely use the air con and hasn't worked for a long time.

Thanks

if it was the air con pump / pulley and the air con doesnt work or your not bothered about it working .... there was a thread recently about removing the aircon .... it sounded like you could just put a shorter belt on missing out the air con pulley

I thought I'd seen that somewhere but now I can't find it, typical. It would be a lot cheaper though ????

Just found it haha

You need a 6 pk 975mm belt if you remove air con pump like I've done.

Thanks for that, got the belt today. Fingers crossed this will cure it

hopefully its not just the alternator having to work alittle more in this cold weather .... mines started to squeel a little on a morning .... nothing too drastic though

Ok, so ive got the belt and it won't go over alt pulley, I'm stuck haha I can't find any pics to help :(

you might need a mate to back the tensioner off fully while you slip the belt over the pulley

My brother got in on eventually. Seems a bit quieter, but I'm not convinced hmm.

I wish it was just that, I hate that squeal, reminds me of my d turbo days :s oh the joys of winter

turn the radio up louder :)
