Temperature warning light flashing on startup

Featured Replies

Hi guys, started my car last night and my temperature warning light started flashing straight away. Now it was freezing last night is it something I need to worry about? Car was fine last night when I was driving it and coolant level is all okay and the clear pink colour. Cheers.

It's definitely that time of year. Search for "expansion bottle prongs".

quite often this is a faulty coolant level sensor, which is part of the expansion tank.  Cure is to replace the entire expansion tank.  Do a search on here it's quite common.  I replaced mine about 2 yrs ago.

Thanks guys, took the coolant lid off and put it back on, switched car on and off again and it's fine now. Will have a look through that three thow cheers.

Mine done this for the first 3 winters I had it, summer time it was fine, although it didnt always get up to 90 on the temp display. replaced itin the end when I had it serviced.

Mine did this to me twice. So I did an oil and filter change. Cured the problem both times.

Mine keeps doing this! Only when it gets down to below 5'c over night though.

She's due a service start of December anyway so am adding a coolant flush to the list but sounds like it might be a new expansion tank too.

Fault always clears once the car is switched off and on again but hey ho I'd rather she didn't make me jump every morning!

I definitely had a coolant leak, which I fixed with some K Seal (I know, I bodged it) but this morning it did this to me, and again after I left a shop, but on the two journeys between these two journeys it didn't happen.  I'm guessing it's the expansion tank sensors/expansion tank cap not sealed properly.

Does anyone else find their coolant level likes to sit a little below the minimum?

Mine's started to do this in the mornings, fairly annoying but once the engine is warm if you switch off and switch back on again it seems to go away... until the next cold start lol.

Going to check and try cleaning the external electrical connections to the sensor (plug end and as much as I can get at of the electrical prongs). Don't expect it to work from what I've read but worth a try before I go buying a new expansion tank.

Cleaned mine the other week, with a rag on the end of a small screwdriver, then silicon greased it all and re-connected - hasn't beeped since.

Mine does mate, sits just above the bottom line of the little triangle doesn't go any lower but won't stay any higher either.

I've recently had my expansion tank replaced after it started bleeping on cold mornings. No bleeps since. It seems to have cured it. Apparently this is very common on VAG cars according to my garage.

Could be worth a try then! I'll let you know if it cures it for me or not.

Bought my 2003 Fabia Classic 1.4 back in May 2008 and, within a year or so, the audible buzzer would sound on start-up and coolant temperature warning light on dashboard display would flash continuously.  This happened throughout the year, irrespective of outside weather temperature.  The coolant gauge would gradually display a normal (halfway) reading and, on enquiring at local garages, I was told it was probably an electrical fault or an indication of a worn cylinder head gasket.  I was quite happy to run with this fault until October this year when the Engine Management warning light came on and the engine appeared to running slightly "rough."  Put it into local Skoda dealer for diagnostics and they replaced the cylinder head gasket, water pump, drive belt, coolant temp sensor, coil pack and spark plugs (cost £700 + VAT) but, when I picked up car and drove it home, I was pleased to see that the coolant warning light was no longer flashing - job done!

However, within a few days, the same problem was back again - audible buzzer on start-up and flashing warning light.  The car is meantime in for yet another diagnostic test (FREE thankfully) and I'm hoping it's just a faulty sensor.

Did they replace to coolant expansion tank as that could be it, or a broken wire under the vacum box like this....

There is no separate sensor. It is integral with the expansion tank.

The tank is part number 6Q0 121 407 B
