towing a car trailer with an octavia

Featured Replies

has anybody been bold enough to try towing a car trailer with an Octavia?

my VRS is plenty powerful but I reckon it will be on its knees with my mk2 golf and car trailer behind!

It would probably physically pull it along no problem but legally you may struggle as the braked towing weight for an Octavia is 1300kg. I would imagine a car trailer to be about 500kg ish. Not sure how much a mk2 Golf weighs but it's probably more than 800kg unless its very stripped out.

Probably pull it but can it stop it? Car trailers can sometimes be fairly heavy empty

Might be easier to A-frame it

Sorry but Confused,,  by the above post,

a car transporter/trailer would have brakes, ie a braked trailer (even when empty). & lighter than a car being A Framed.

So unless the A Framed Vehicle is on Linked Braking, how is the tow vehicle going to be better at stopping it?

Aye, the trailer brakes work through the towing arm at the front of the trailer, when you brake the car, the trailer 'runs on' toward you (very slightly) and the towing arm of the trailer pushes back (relative to the rest of the trailer) and operates brakes on the trailer wheels.

Your Octy should tow OK. have a look in the drivers door shut, the braked and un braked towing weights are printed on a label.  You should take your trailer and Golf to be weighed together to get the combined mass.

You sit someone in it.

Octavias should weigh about the same as an Audi 80, and we had an M reg Audi 80 and had to tow a Suzuki Swift on a car trailer because the insurance company couldn't find the house where to car was at and it was written off, it towed it fine. Don't even think that old trailer had any breaks.

Not with an A frame, you can't!

Ignoring the questionable legallity of A-Frames, the vehicle on it becomes a trailer, and it is illegal to have passengers in a trailer.

Ive seen people sat in cars been towed on A-frames before. Maybe they were just risking it but i just assumed it was legit
