Not yet!

Well I can only answer the steering one, but the lowest is 1 (which is what the Fabia vRS/Ibiza FR/Polo Gt/Golf GTI et all are set at), and the highest is 5 , which seems stupidly light.

My car follows the second format. It was 000130, now 000120. Steering does seem v. slightly heavier, but can someone confirm once and for all the total variable range. ie How low can you go? I'm scared to put in an invalid code for fear of permenant damage!

1. According to a very respected Skoda Master Tech, the range is 110 to 150 with 110 being the least assistance - this is what my Y-reg 2001 Fabia Elegance was/is set to

2. You won't be able to modify (the majority of?) settings in the ECU without registering your copy of VAG-COM so this may be why faults cannot be cleared....

The alternator fault is a common one and relates to the DMF signal from the alternator to the dash nd engine ECU. The only way I have fixed this fault before is to replace the alternator.

I will get the correct coding table from our manuals tomorrow and let you know but im prety sure im right. The coding is different from that on the Ibiza and Polo in some cases. But either way Skoda actually forbay us to alter coding unless programming a new control unit as there are legal implications if the vehicle is involved in an accident.

Perhaps I didn't word my query #2 very well. Sometimes I can clear the fault code, it then remains clear for some time before reappearing. Other times, I can't clear the code, presumably because whatever is causing it is happening at that time - it's an intermitant fault (everyones favourite!).

Despite the above, I don't get any lights or beeps and everything seems to behave as it should. I guess untill that changes, I'll leave well alone. Trouble is, mysteries like this tend to bug me :confused: . Perhaps ignorance really is bliss!
