Worn Rear Suspension Bushes?

I've a recently acquired 06 1.9 TDI estate with rear left tyre worn noticeably on inside shoulder and hear knocking over bumps from same area as best I can tell.

Putting 2 and 2 together I'm assuming rear bushes have had it causing wheel geometry to be out hence abnormal tyre wear.

It's a bit chilly to be lying underneath the car with a big screwdriver, getting soft with age!

Any pointers to best diagnose worn bits?

I've heard replacing the bushes can be a real pain without a well equipped workshop...
