HID bulbs which way is up?

Featured Replies

So I've fitted my FL scout with a HID kit and it's all going well, massive improvement.

But I can't find an answer to this, which way up do the bulbs go? the electrode wire bar that goes the length of the bulb must cast a shadow so I'm thinking it should be on the underside of the bulb as the light from the top half of the bulb will come out of the projector lens?

The problem with all this is the clips in the back of a FL headlamp want you to insert the bulb with the wire uppermost so unless I cut a little locating tab off the cars bulb clips, they are in upside down in my book? What do we think?

Mine are in with the electrode on the right hand side. It's just how they fitted in. Maybe to so with dazzling drivers and bulbs are aimed to the left?? Not really thought if it till today and I went and had a look.

Can't say I notice any shadowing either too bright to look for any length of time.

+1 on the above. Just fitted mine and didn't look which way round they NEED to be.

Yes not sure it matters but I'm sure I can see a dark line down the middle of the beam.

My HID bulbs had a base with a tooth like tab just like the H7's that were removed. They can only be fitted one way.

Yes, so did mine. But if you cut the locator tab off the clip the bulbs seat in, you could put them in 180 degrees. That would put the wire bar at the bottom. However I can't decided whether its worth the trouble. It's such a big improvement already!

I would suggest that they are designed to be put in as the locator tab suggests. Cutting tabs off is making unnecessary work for yourself.

Well because the original clips were for holding  the halogen plug that fits on the back of the halogen bulb,  they've already been sort of modified to get the HIDs in so I'm not sure if they are the right way up, there is definitely a dark line in the beam pattern which must be as a result of the wire bar being directly in front of the light source.

Not sure about the wire but the flat edge of the H7 base should be at the bottom.

Thanks, I'll have a look at my bulbs not noticed the flat edge!

Had a look at the bulbs they have a flat base edge at the top so I've switched them round and now the flat base and wire is on the bottom.

Before I swapped them round I held up a piece of paper in front of the head lamps, and there is a definite shadow which is quite significant when the wire goes along the top, right down the beam. With the bulbs the other way up the shadow is gone. It must be significant as I noticed it on the road. The clip that holds the bulb needs the locating tab bent back to be able to do this.
