Cracked VRS alloy

Featured Replies

Hi, just took my 2003 Octavia to garage to have what I thought was a puncture fixed, only to be told my alloy is cracked, resulting in a slow deflation of tyre, a colleague said I could get it drilled and welded?? I drive over 300 miles most weekends commuting, that doesn't seem the safest option, I looked around for some second hand ones but struggle finding the same one. Don't want to but a full new set as I only bought the car to commute and want to keep the cost to a minimum.

Is welding it safe? Or is a new or second hand alloy required?

Cheers

Roaig.

yes its safe

Cheers, I'll have a look at getting it done.

Put the spare on for now and carry a can of tyre weld in the boot until you find one on eBay for a reasonable price?

You don't mention what style wheel you need. If its a vrs spider then like mentioned there is a few on eBay. Or have a look round your local scrap yard its amazing what you find. It is perfectly safe having wheels repaired I've had to do this twice on some cheap aftermarket wheels I had a few years ago. This might be your cheapest option.

Ha ha sorry dude! Yes spec savers indeed!

There is one in the parts for sale section, assuming it's a 17" not a 16" for an estate.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help and advice.

A mechanic stated that I can't put the spare on as the car is too low for standard wheels and tyres, and it would probably rip up the inner arches. Shame as that would have done great.

The spare should be an identical vrs alloy?

It is a spider type wheel as well, apologies for not mentioning before.

The spare is a standard wheel, as the car is a vRS replica, lowered and remapped + loads of problems. :-(

It may have even been mentioned on these forums before.........

Cracked 2 of my spiders 4 years on a damaged manhole had them welded up been fine ever since

Seems like welding is the way forward for now. Cheers. :-)
