What TV/ Sound system to match

Featured Replies

Hi guys looking at buying a new tv after 5 years of samsung 40inch viewing I feel it's getting smaller and duller. Also looking at getting rid of all the amps receivers and speakers I have in place if something less intrusive but just as great sounding if not better, I've seen a few soundbar/sub combos which look ideal for my living room. I don't really have space for separate speakers.

So I'm looking at a budget of around £800 for the tv, not got my mind up on size so long as it's bigger than my 40, I would think 47 would fit my living room nicely. I'm also not sure I need all those smart tv extras like internet and netflix etc, I've got iPads and laptops for that tvs are for watching tv on!

Where would I find the best deals and discounts instore on boxing day or online? Where online?

Thoughts on soundbars? I need my bass so def needs a separate sub

Thanks guys

I'd use Whathifi, Which? and sites like Expert Review to narrow down my choices and then Richer Sounds seem to be as cheap as anyone else for buying, with the proviso that in the sales you might just find another store offers your chosen model cheaper on the day.

I would check John Lewis when their sale starts, you get a 5 year warranty on tvs thrown in as well.

Direct Tvs are usually as cheap as anyone, if not cheaper. There warranty isn't as good a John Lewis's

If you need a really bright screen then LCD/LED-backlight etc are your best bet, but if that isn't a problem and you like sport and movies, then Plasma is still your best bet :)

Thanks for the info, ive found direct tvs they look decent but just looking on currys right now and they have a £50 off code.

Anyone got a Samsung 6670

Its either that or the Sony W805

Thats taken me 1 week to narrow down to these 2.

Btw do you think currys realise that plugging in a tv aerial to sell their tvs isnt working when they have their chosen exclusive sets running off a DVD. they really need to run them all off a 1080p source for a decent comparison!

Do you think that the Curry's staff that hooked them up have a clue as to what they are doing? Selling HD tvs without displaying HD video (even 720p) is a joke.

Whilst SoundBars have come a long way - you still won't get the same result as a decent 5.1 or 7.1 setup and there are some quite discreet packages out there.

Have a look on a site called hdtvtest.

Lots of details on there.

Personally I would go Sony and if you go for a sound bar try get one with an external sub, takes up a little more space but its worth it.

This is what I use for sound http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/HT-FS1/specifications quite old now but has HDMI connections and passthrough it also has brava sync so hooks up to my tv and PS3 and I don't need multiple remotes :)

Try and get matching TV and Sound as they work together better.

So I made my mind up and bought the Samsung ue46f6670 still not sorted the audio side of things but the tv is very good.

I went into currys again with a USB stick and some had movie trailers loaded onto and started plugging it in the tvs I was interested in. The new sony had a good picture just a bit too dark even after playing with the settings also the screen was too reflective so opted for the samsung, cool smart remote with it too.

Are you hanging the TV on the Wall?

are you looking for a 5/7.1 sound system? or just a soundbar? I personally don't like soundbars, I would prefer to have the satellite speakers dotted around the living with hidden wiring, but then again i like to watch a lot movies with the surround sound.

You wouldn't need much space for satellite speakers if you put them on the wall? so something like this http://www.superfi.co.uk/p-9728-boston-acoustics-soundware-xs-se-speakers-pair.aspx i would personally recommend the B&W M1 speakers.

What kind of AMP do you have? Yamaha do some really nice ones and Sony do some good ones if you want to save a bit of money.

I love movies and having the movie experience at home :)

Hi I would be looking at a whole new set up, preferably 5.1 but the rears would need to be wireless and I've not seen any other than the kits from samsung and such which I don't really want.

The tv is staying on its unit but it leaves no space either side for speakers so I would need to wall mount them. Or at either corner of the room which I understand isn't the best place for them

I have a Yamaha YSP-2200 in the sitting room to keep the missus happy - it's surprisingly good.

Down to £499 in Richer Sounds and Sevenoaks.
