MOT due and a few changes needed - best course of action

Featured Replies

My MOT is due and I have yet to change anything from my last service and MOT advisory notes, but here is the info:

Service 2012 advisory:

Front suspension bushes slight movement

Front pads worn low

Front discs corroded

Excess play OSF anti roll bar link

MOT 2012 advisory:

Both front (rear) suspension bushes deteriorated

Front brake pads wearing thin

Now as my pads are wearing thin and discs corroded I am looking at upgrading the discs and pads now so would you advise I get everything done together at once including the bushes or am I ok having them done separate? anything else I should ask for while having the above changed while they are at it?

How many hours work should pads, discs and bushes take all together?

How much should I pay for pads, discs and bushes? which u recommend?

ok I have discovered that the 312mm disks don't fit in the standard 288mm calipers so you need new discs, new pads, 2x new callipers and 2x new carriers

which do u recommend? links?

Can't believe you have left all them things untill your next MOT, pretty careless of you really. Try Euro Car Parts for discs and pads, I went for Pagid as they are a good price and good quality. Shouldn't take you long to do either if you have a bit of mechanical knowledge.

Agreed, I'm totally confused at you having a "serious hard driving" forum name and claiming higher than normal engine output, and you let the car you drive get into this condition, if I was you I would have been smart enough to keep quiet about this mess you are now in, maybe time to change your forum user name?!

Scrap it

Id just put it in for a mot & see what it fails on,looks like your going to need front pads & discs & the anti roll bar link replacing & maybe the bushes depending on how worn they are. Id just replace them with standard parts.

Eurocarparts or TPS as suggested.

Replaced front discs and pads with Pagid stuff on SWMBOs Octavia vRS for less than £100 from Eurocarparts parts.

I'd look at TPS for the ARB links and bushes, but that's personal preference.

Easy to do yourself.

Front discs corroded - I've had this ,along with "worn front discs" , I even got it from a tyre place at 33k on mine. At 55k i checked mine- no corrosion, and 20.5 mm (new 23, change 19) ,so midway. I'd say a change of MOT place is called for to one that is not looking for work ( I'd look for local council place). I've even had "heat shield on rear box corroded" to find that rear box is double skin ,and tester was talking out of seat of pants. Some of them issue advisories like toilet paper , in an effort to save **** falling on to them( and generate income) . As mikey says- go for MOT, and see what it fails on and start from there .However ,it might be worth checking on the pad thickness on the discs.

i would start getting the brake discs and pads as they will need changing and go from there.
