1.9 tdi 2005 Octavia drops to 1000 revs for a few seconds and will not respond.

usually happens when in second gear. odd time happens on motorway

when I pull in for a few seconds without turning ignition off, it will accelerate away no problem.

happens 2/3 times a week . any help would be welcome

On the motorway the engine revs can't actually suddenly drop to 1,000 without a massive sudden deceleration. Assuming this doesn't happen, my (non-expert) guess is that this is an issue with the indicated rpm, not the engine?
