Xmas in Finistere

Featured Replies

Hi all

A view of Xmas Day in Finistere by Douarnenez Bay, hail storm for 30 - 40 mins, white over, together with thunder and lightning, quite spectacular over the bay, photo not brilliant!

Cheers Frenchtone!  Should you wish to re-locate to North Yorkshire, you may like to know it was a brilliant, sunny day up here.  Went for a walk with the Yeti and family up to Brimham Rocks.  The SM was a bit disappointed as not a snowflake in sight. But the dog was pleased to bits to play Frisbee up by the top house/café area.

If anyone wants know what Brimham (and a little of Fountains Abbey, even closer to home) looks like in the snow, check this video:

(P.S. Thought the song might be appropriate for someone living in France too?)

Happy Christmas

As David Coleman said, a game of 2 halves, a beautiful afternoon! Followed by a 2 hour power cut early evening, EDF probably reconnecting overhead services after gales etc 24th - the area faces the western approaches and as a result experiences the full wrath of channel based storms!

Hence "Finistere" is one of the areas mentioned regularly in the Shipping Forecast. (Or certainly used to be).

:nerd:

'Finistere' is in Brittany, France, and includes this chap Frenchtone.  The nearest he gets to a Shipping Forecast, I suspect, is guessing where one of his model boats will finish up.

:nerd:

Cape Finisterre is one of the pointy bits at the North-West corner of Spain.  This was the bit that gave its name to the Shipping Forecast area to the west of it.  It was renamed 'Fitzroy' in 2002, in honour of the chap who invented weather (well, the Met Office, at least).

Here endeth the Boxing Day Lecture

Just as I tried to post, keybd probs!

Poole based pirates stole the weather vane of the church there and returned to Poole with it, where it sat on top of the parish church for some years until the Finisterreans recaptured it and took it back home!
