Torque app not connecting to ecu in 2000 SLx tdi 110

Featured Replies

I have the torque app which is connected to an android tablet and works fine on my seat. Doesn't seem to want to connect to the ecu on my octavia SLX tdi 110. Someone mentioned that this might not be compatible , can anyone confirm please? I have also tried with VCDS . Can someone confirm before I investigate the OBD port , which is hanging loose anyway

Are you using VCDS, or lite with a cheap cable.

Do you have an aftermarket radio?

The OP has stated the Torque App, which means bluetooth ODB adapter

Guess if you've used the same adapter on your  Seat, you know the adapter works, and how to pair up the devices

1st thing would be can you see/detect the adapter once plugged into the Octavia, and connect to it

Or is it that the ODB adapter is just not detectable - ie its not powering up from the ODB port

If so, I'd suspect loose wiring to the ODB port, or maybe you haven't pushed the OFB adapter into the port far enough for all pins to connect

I've encountered loose connectors which just give way not allowed you push the ODB adapter (or a USB cable) into the plug

In those situations I've removed the dash overside to be able to hold the connector still to be able to push the ODB adapter in

He also says he tried VCDS, apparently without success.

You can use VCDS with a bluetooth ODB adapter (and a laptop with bluetooth, and some re-assigning of comm ports)

I my experience Torque App and bluetooth ODB adapter are more 'plug-n-play' than VCDS and USB cable

if the OBD port is loose, some of the wiring could have become detached or damaged. I wonder why the port is loose, has someone investigated the non working port before I wonder.

I am using fully registered VCDS with a Gendan cable. This also works ok on the Seat but as I have a notebook does have some comms problems sometimes. My question was really as to whether this model is compatible with VCDS - I suspect it is as it's Golf 4 bits. The OBD plug is literally dangling so I suspect it is damaged or missing connections. I will retry tonight with VCDS.

And yes I have an aftermarket radio

Sorry just to be clear, do you have fill fat VCDS and a proper Ross tech cable or VCDS lite and a cheap gendan cable.

Do you get an error when connecting to the engine controller? If so what is the error?

Pull the fuse for the radio and try again.

Try disconnecting the aftermarket radio, they can play havoc with the car diagnostics system. A dealer will not even attempt to connect their kit with an aftermarket stereo installed as their kit can be damaged because of it. if it works without the stereo connected, you must locate and disconnect the "K line" from the ISO connector on the cars wiring loom.

Yes, your car should be compatible with VCDS and Torque.

If you've got an aftermarket stero, with K line still attached as above - consider yourself very lucky if your central locking still works ;)

On my old Octavia, which had an aftermarket stereo with the k line disconnected I used to get communication errors on the engine controller with VCDS lite and had to remove the radio fuse to get VCDS lite to communicate. With a proper Ross tech cable I had no problems.

Full version of VCDS £20 Gendan cable. I am not connecting at all to the car so I guess its a plug problem on the car side. Will try pulling the fuse anyway.

No you need VCDS lite with the £20 cable. The full version needs to £260 ross tech cable.

Sorry I meant registered version of lite rather than the freeware. I originally bought vag com 3.11 more than 10 years ago from ross tech and this is what they migrated me to.

The cheap cable is the weak link. Try pulling the radio fuse and see if it works.

I think my notebook also doesn't help . It runs windows 7 basic and the atom chip is not really up to it. Will pull the fuse and report back

I pulled the fuse and re ran using torque - no luck. With VCDS lite and cable I got a connection and fault codes from some of the controllers such as ABS address 03, HVAC 08,Airbags 15, Central Conv 46. Is it possible that the ECU is not connecting to OBD somehow . Seems strange that some are readable but not others? Ran the leon using the cable and got a full set of readings. Anyone got any ideas apart from those mentioned?

Did any faults relate to the engine controller? Try disconnecting the car battery for a whole and then try again. Also try reducing the connection speed to see if that helps.

No it wouldn't connect to engine. It's obviously doing something but it is strange . I will try disconnecting and scanning just the engine.

I used to get a message something along the lines of "communication error, unknown protocol". Did you get anything similar or just "no response from controller"?

The problem with the cheap cables seems to be about getting the communications between the cable and a controller in sync, some are more picky than others hence why some work and some don't. That's why I suggested slowing down the comma speed. It is effectively a serial connection and if the two ends are not in perfect sync then it all goes pear shaped.
