drivers door will only lock with key...

Featured Replies

ok fault started about a week ago... 2004 mk1 octavia estate

the car will lock and unlock with the key fob BUT the drivers door 90% wont and i have to lock and unlock it with the key manually.

i also noticed today while driving along a clicking noise, this i found out was the central locking ... locking/unlocking on its own whilst driving... weird..eh..

is this a common problem and would it show up on a diagnostic vcds check..!!

cheers

ok just looked at some older postings so i think its a matter of taking the door card off and checking water ingress in the pins..

I'm 90% sure It'll be the door loom or window motor or both.In my case it was both.

I had this and it was the pins in the door loom where it connects into the motor/control unit.  On the outside things looked okay but the pin had corroded from inside somehow so it took an auto electrician to find it for me.  Luckily I'd bought a whole door with everything on it in preparation.

As it's working some of the time, check the wiring harness between the car and the door, the module connector for water, and connector on the door catch. If everything looks OK, check the resistance of the wiring. (If you have a multimeter). If you can't find anything amiss, check for power and earth on pins 1 and 2 of the door catch when operating the fob. When locking, one should be 12v while the other is earth, when unlocking, they should reverse. If all is OK, replace the door catch. (The central locking motor is built in).

Before you replace anything, is the dash warning light and the interior light working when the door is open?

ok checked this morning and when i open the door the puddle light does NOT come on and the dashboard warning that the door is open does not come on.  interior light didnt come on either

The ticking sound is the central locking trying to lock your door when you get to 20mph. Because it doesn't lock it keeps trying everytime you go below 20 and then go back over it. If its the same as our Seat you can lick the door once you get in with the remote fob. Putting the key in the ignition then takes the dwadlock off but leaves all doors locked and fixes it. Its only a temporary fix to stop ir cycling but stops it annoying you as you drive.

right here a quick update...

took the door panel off today and as soon as i unplugged the large black plug from the door mechanism a load of water dribbled out and it was all green and nasty...!!!!!!!

ive cleaned it all up with electrical spray and dried it all and put it all back together but the puddle light dosent work nor does the illuminated bit on the dash to show the door is open..

now ALL 4 windows will suddenly open on there own...wtf..!!!

so im now at a bit of a loss... can i disable the whole alarm system via my vcds or will i have to buy a whole new electronics module thingy that fits in the drivers door, if i buy a seconhand one i guess it wont work with my key fob either will it..!!!

I couldn't see how to get that large black plug off so I sprayed it , also found a bare brown wire between the door and car body . Thanks for contributing to this thread it's helped me out.
