Spray painting?

I'm not sure if this in the right section but here goes, I was just wondering if anyone has gone and bought a air compressor and spray gun them selfs and painted anything on their cars I.e bumpers bonnets ect? I have a very local paint supplier that will mix the colours I need, just wanted to know if anyone has had the experience of this and what techniques there are, if it will be a decent job as I would love to put my car in a body shop but with the work I would want i may aswell have the whole car resprayed, thanks in advance
