Low coolant warning!

Featured Replies

First time I've had one in about 15 years.

Checked tank and level ok but coolant is jelly like.

Turned off & back on and warning cleared.

Rang dealer - they think a sensor but still a concern.

Any ideas? No smell of fuel or oil in expansion tank.

Not had warning light but noticed the coolant level was only just above min line on mine just before first service, forgot to mention it to the dealer but they had topped it up, seems to have stabilised now though, probably something to keep an eye on.

I would not have thought the coolant should be like a jelly and I have just checked mine and it is a pink liquid that is at the max line.

Have they put the correct antifreeze in at PDI?

Antifreeze/coolant is added at the factory but either way it shouldn't be like jelly....

I would speak to the dealer as if it's like jelly it will not be able to cool the engine and may lead to over heating.

Just checked again and it's now all liquid but about 2cms below the min line! Will top up and get booked in to be checked ASAP.

Skoda Assistance on their way - and hoping that this is the first and last time!!

Any news?

Nope - said they'd get here before 4pm so almost an hour to go.

Ahh fair enough. Will be interested to see what they say and why it went from liquid to jelly to liquid again!

All sorted. No leaks just low level. RAC man happy and so am I!!

Agreed with others. Should not be jelly like. Not trying to be funny, was it clear jelly or cloudy jelly? Not sure about cars, but with marine engines, if you had oil in the system it would emulsify into a milk like liquid and may separate given sufficient time to settle. I would definitely have it checked out properly by the dealers. But if the RAC man says it's ok then it's probably nothing. Better be safe than sorry though!

Andy, dont be so sure there is no problem. Ive just checked mine, and it is halfway between max and min. It was right at the max line when i picked it up on Xmas Eve. Coolant should not be used up at that rate. In fact, I dont think I ever had to top up my coolant on my last car, and I had that nearly 4yrs. The last time I recall coolant disappearing like that, it was on my Rover, and that was down to the head gaskett.

Matt noticed his coolant was low before his first service. Yours has gone down below the minimum mark. Now ive noticed mine has dropped as well.

Sorry, but there is no way yours should have dropped below the minimum mark, and im worried that the RAC guy reckons it was normal.

But with Matts and now also mine having read quite a bit lower than max (mine after 1 week), I would seriously be thinking something is up.

Will keep a keen eye on it over the next few days. Suggest you do the same.

He managed to work out there was no leaks? Dont think id be that certain without taking a decent look underneath the car, and Im not sure thats possible without getting it on a ramp and getting underneath.

It can be very difficult to tell as well. Sometimes the leak is slow enough so as to make it very difficult to see. A low coolant reading seems a sure sign to me though that something is up.

This still seems strange to me and I think I would still ask the dealers.

Think I will have to check on my coolant level in some daylight!

Also breakdown / recovery people arent always as good as they should be and sometimes dont know their a*se from their elbow. I diagnosed an issue once to be told no it def wasnt that it was something else completely. Funny enough when the garage looked at it, it was exactly what I said. Thanks RAC bloke who refused to listen and cost me an arm and a leg at a main dealer for nothing!

Ive never owned a diesel before, so I will check with you clever people on here. Diesels dont drink coolant anymore than petrols do they? Because something doesnt seem right.

No that Im aware of.

No cars should drink coolant as coolant systems are sealed systems as far as I was aware. Any loss of coolant is normally a sign it is leaking somewhere, the cap is lose or the cap is giving way at the wrong pressure - something which regularly happened on my old MG.

AA/ RAC have the equipment to do a temporary fix to get you on your way. Or if they cant find the problem, they can usually do something to get you up and running. You then go to a garage to get a proper diagnosis and permanent fix. They are the ones with the better equipment and facilities to check a vehicle.

My dad got stuck at work with my old car one. Car would not start at all. Didnt even try and turn. No noise or movement whatsoever. AA bloke couldnt see what the problem was. He was at a loss. But then again, all he could really do was look into the bonnet. He gave dad a jump start, just to get him home.

At the weekend, my dad clambered underneath the car to take a look himself. He eventually found what the problem was. A clip connecting a wire to the starter motor solenoid had snapped. The only way the AA guy could have seen this, was to clamber underneath the car.

Exactly my understanding. Anyway, going to show it to my dad when he gets out the bath!! He has a lot more knowledge than me on this sort of thing.

Will get it booked in ASAP.

The RAC guy pressure tested the system and it held according to the gadget he used (sealed it onto the expansion tank and used a vacuum to pressurise). No visible fluid underneath car or elsewhere in engine bay either.

However once pressurised the tank level dropped completely so he refilled coolant to max level.

Will check again in the morning but get it booked in regardless as I've never had coolant drop out like this - well not in the last 5 cars I've run daily at least.

My 205's are a different matter - if they don't leak then something's wrong lol.

Checked level this morning and fine.

The "jelly" is actually a small sack of coolant inside the tank - had a proper poke around today as yesterday I was suited @ booted for work and didn't fancy damaging M&S's finest lol.

Ive taken the car for an hours drive this afternoon. Later will check what the coolant is like. Was still halfway before i left.

Coolant level still the same. No extra leaks. I have a sneaky suspiscion the cap hadnt been closed fully when delivered, as I opened and then closed it last night. Then when i opened it again, there was a slight click (it clicks shut), which I cant remember feeling when i first opened it.

Just keep an eye on it over the next few days.
