Starting to look for a Superb ....

Featured Replies

I use to have a tweaked Fabia VRS.

And I sold it last Christmas to buy a VW Jetta mk5.

We have since decided to get a puppy, and not a week after we do that we found out my Mrs is pregnant with our 3rd child!!

So 5 people + dog won't fit in the Jetta!!

I thought about a T5 Caravelle. But thought I'd just browse about - always loved the split tailgate on the Superb & think it makes for a great family car so here I am!!

Not sure about models/specs etc. I only do 30 miles a day to and from work. So could go for either diesel or petrol.

What should I be looking for? Issues recalls??

Hoping for a great response on here as I always remember, thanks in advance!!

Hi,

I've got a 2l 170 bhp CR "twin" and I love it.

However, with 3 kids, a wife and a dog, you might be best served going for an estate. I've done a fair bit of reading on this forum and no one seems to have major issues with newer Superbs (less than 5 years old). Everyone seems v. positive, whatever type they drive, be it a 105 bhp Greenline diesel or the 260 (?) bhp V6 petrol. Drive as many as you can to see what suits you best.

Good luck and enjoy !!

You might want to look at the octy estate too as if thats big enough you'll get more for your budget

Unless you want to spec it to Superb Elegance standards, in which case the Octy is more expensive.

Yes, I think you'd have to go for the estate if looking at a Superb. It's not the widest of cars though - you won't get three child seats in the back.

Great choice!

Its a no brained!

Masses of space.

Audi parts for much less money.

Reliable and u get to join the best forum in the world!

Certainly petrol for u (due to low mileage).

At elegance for all the toys!

Good luck with your search!

My Girls are currently 10 & 7 - this new baby was a bit of a surprise! My 10 year old is tall enough not to need a seat any longer and my 7 year old is just on a booster base. So space on the back seat isnt for 3 big child seats. I never though of an Estate (last time we were expecting a child we jumped early and bought a VW Touran, but then lost the baby - so we arent doing anything until the baby is here!)

I just like the size/style of the Superb, Rear legroom looks good, plenty of toys/high spec for the money.

Do they handle well? As you can see from the Jetta, i'm on coilovers & Merc 18" splitrims, upgraded bushes and brakes. I'm an enthusiastic driver, must handle, go and stop well.

Or should I maybe be looking at Octavia VRS estates??

I love mine but the back seat is absurdly narrow for a big car. To belt the grand kids in we need to pull the booster seats as close to the door as possible to allow us to clip the belt in.

As I said, a brilliant car but take the kids and sit them in it.

Be carefully if you need to put the car seat as close to the door as possible because if you have rear seat side air bags (not curtain) they can have an effect on the car seat and it's occupant! especially if the car seat does not have the more recent side bolsters.

It is a big car on softish springs. With the 18" low profile tyres it grips very well and the brakes are up to the job. However on standard springs it won't handle like your Jetta. It does understeer if provoked, it will float over big bumps and it will roll more than you are used to. I find that it has encouraged me to drive more smoothly which is no bad thing, but it may not be for you.

Having said that I really like the car, the space, the build quality and the equipment. Best thing is to try it out!

Sorry Mike, my mis- I assumed because the superb is the bigger and more expensive car to buy initially they would cost more used.

for the OP a decent test driv in both will help you decide. my thoughts towards the estate asumed you were taking the dog in the car with you and it would sit in the boot. you can put them in a hatch but they tend to slobber all over the rear screen if they are big enough and woud be less prone to travel sickness in an estate because they can see outside more easily.

I agree.

Superb has masses of legroom + huge boot!

But,

It is narrow and even 3 adults will be a bit squash!

Hence i always ONLY take four in complete BLISS comfort :-)

The Dog will only be with us very occasionally - which is why I thought the twin/hatch would be my best bet.

She travels very well at the moment on the back seat - usually sleeps most places!

Hi,

Happy New Year to you and everyone here.

I was in a similar position last year (ok without the additional suprise). I was moving from a Roomster and always liked the look of the Superb. However, after trying the Superb Estate and new model Octavia I was suprised how little between them.

The Octavia has really grown and I can fit two large mountain dogs and a whippet in the boot no problem. (the moutain dogs are Swiss and Bernese). I also have two teenage girls who are tall like me. I am 6 ft 4 and there is too much leg room in the front of the Octavia.

Both cars are brilliant which made the decision harder than first thought.

I liked the 1.6 and 2.0 170 engines in the Superb and also all the diesels in the Octavia.

Two things that swung in favour of the Octavia. My knees kept whacking the sides of the centre console of the Superb and the 0% finance offer on the Octavia was better due to the projected residuals. I was looking at the Superb Greenline Elegance with a few extras and found that the Octavia vRS DSG TDI with a few extras was cheaper per month. So I went for a bit of fun and can honestly say this Octavia is the best car I have ever owned. ok not has fuel efficient as the old Roomster 1.6 diesel but worth it.

Hmm - Octavia VRS estate!

What I would do if I would be you: test drive Superb first. Many years I am into cars and no youtube or written review can match your own and personal impression. My car now has sport suspension and r18 245/40 tires with pressure 2.6 bar. That is hard ride, believe me. After reading so much about Superb - I was expecting soft suspension, but that was not the case at all, allthough the suspension was standard and r17 225/45 wheels.

And about room in the back. Volvo v70 has 1400 mm hip room in the back. Superb 1451 mm. Octavia 1423 mm. Audi a6 avant 1491 mm. I was having 3 adults in back of my v70 for longer jouneys - like warsaw (6h) or Praque (15h) and they survived :-)
