Vrs fuel gauge fault

2004 fabia vrs 130 fuel gauge goes up instead of down and goes to empty with light on when filled.Took sender unit out and lifted float and watch gauge move opposite way.Swapped two wires on float switch no joy same fault.Check wires going in and tomorrow going to check earth from clocks up near fuse box... Anyone had this problem???????
