Getting a VRS Friday or Saturday- 1 immediate mods recommended?

Featured Replies

So narrowed things down to 3 VRS', 2 stock and 1 running a REVO stage 2 (decatted with SS turbo back exhaust on it). If I go with 1 of the stock motors I'll be getting it remapped on a stage 1 almost immediately after a quick engine shakedown. I'm never too fussed on getting the best ever map on a stage 1 as I only ever run them for about 2 months before going upto a custom map for stage 2/3/3+ so I'll just get a cheap mobile map on to start with from one of the mappers we know.

Just want some opinions on the immediate mods people are recommending to save me trawling through pages of the forums looking. Just looking for basics like whether a PCV delete is recommended, taking out/bypassing the canister solenoid, if regapped iridium plugs are recommended, type of oils people are using- the basic sort of stuff. I'll be figuring out sorting out the main performance stuff over the coming months but just want to get some feedback on the basic "must have" stuff people are doing that's tried and tested from the get go.

It'd also be nice to get some suggestions on uprating the ICE- must be bluetooth handsfree and BT media streaming capable with steering column controls. I'll be running a OBD2 bluetooth reader feeding data to torque pro on my phone and tablet with both devices also feeding back into the sound system to stream mp3's. digital radio and my satnav thus the BT streaming and handsfree ;)

Looking forward to your answers

PS I own Modified Motors- FB Page and websites if anyone is wanting to show off their cars ;)

If going with any deletes you'd be better going with a rtech or shark map where stuff can be mapped out

Order yourself up a rarb mate, ( budget depending - some coilovers too lol )

But rarb is a big difference

Induction would get u yummy noise :)

Lowered

Mapped

Rarb

A good 3 mods and a huge difference tho

As for stereo the vrs doesnt have steering controls bud

Double din screens always look nice , ( or single and some gauges :) )

The coilies will come after I've checked the dampers to see if springs will work as well for road rather than track handling and with the custom map I can get them to delete any sensor feeds or adjust error values as needed but cheers for the heads up- how much are shark retailing their box for now? The site isn't listing the price and fancied running an economy map for long motorway hauls and peak performance map for weekends and evenings ;)

I was also looking at front and rear strut braces but not sure what people going with, any suggestions?

The 23mm R32 farb is the upgrade £100

Then you got the neuspeed 28mm rear £270

Eibach 25mm rear 230

Or the cheapest is the whiteline bud 160

Shark maps id guess 250 ?

If your near reading clives there ( cntuning )

If near kent u got rob ( w8 performance )

Rtech is up north and have a awesome rep for maps

You can pic up s3 upper strut brace for £60-£70

Or a TT brace for £30 but u need to cut brackets off / smooth then paint

Spring ms and shocks are used widely on here bud

Koni fsds iirc are the most common choice

Now that's some quality information right there and just what I was looking for. Time to get my wee notebook out and start adding to it

:) better get a big notebook lol

Hi,

Not a mod but i would STRONGLY recommend replacing the oil pick up, as it is not a service item but it should be! My car has a fantastic service history 3 owners from new including me. Skoda service history up till 70,000 then VAG specialists from then. My pickup was almost completely blocked! Common assumptions its the oil pump that fails its not its the pickup. Even the mechanic said its not really necessary, untill he took it off, his words "good call on the oil pickup"

Get a genuine one, only £30 odd quid plus oil. Best money you will every spend i promise you that.

HTH sorry no mod ideas.

Paddy

Seriously good heads up, I'll be changing the oil after 2 weeks regardless and will do it as part of that...cheers

Don't you mean check book lol. Lloyd will get you spending he's always instigating mods.

There's always one lol

On another note if your new purchase doesn't have it I can highly recommend retro fitting cruise control. It's fairly easy todo and the kit from the dealers is reasonably priced. Just needs activating with vcds.

Number 1 on my todo list Chris, can't bloody live without it...know anywhere Newcastle or Glasgow that does it?

Not sure about places up there but the kit is available from Teesside VW on eBay http://bit.ly/1dyDAtl easy enough to fit.

I lack patience pulling cables and don;t you need vagcom to enable it?

It's abit fiddly at the ecu end if you look on the listing you can download the instructions to see what kind of a job it is. Yes it would need enabling but any vw specialist can do that or a forum member near to you may do it for beer tokens.

FIddly stuff I give to pro's to do, my hands were made for hammers not tweezers lol. Don;t suppose there's a multifunction steering wheel available is there?

Lloyd is the one with all knowlege for help of any kind and his car is a great example of a octy vrs and if you cant find the answer he will

No MFSW for the MK1 I'm afraid it lacks canbus controller iirc.

Not to worry, I'm sure I can live with the stalk lol

Hehe :)

Awesome

Oil, nothing wrong with genuine Quantum from TPS, and not expensive.

Things to check:

Coil Pack recall, you might be eligible.

Check all hoses for splits these cars are getting on a bit.

Throttle body clean.

Fuel filter, no official change schedule and cost peanuts.

Mods:

RARB.

Dogbone.

SFS or Forge TIP.

3" Downpipe, Decat or sports cat.

Shortshift.

S3 upper and lower brace.

Suspension very much debatable with A LOT OF OPINIONS.

Spring and shocks wise not a lot available, I run H&R spring with FSD's  not to bad a set up if you wish to keep some comfort but not hard enough for me personally,

Coilovers lots more choices Wietecs and KW's Get plenty of good reviews, cheaper get very mixed reviews.

Thing you will need most of all after reading this site.

DEEP POCKETS

I try to run Royal Purple where I can in engines but it's better to switch while the engine has low miles, not sure if anyone;s used it on the 1.8 20v yet? As for deep pockets lol. I've just finished modding a citroen ds3 dsport to 225bhp on a stock k03 twin scroll turbo, because of the age of the model there's next to nothing around for them so nearly everything was done custom. Got a tad pricey lol.

Good list that Andy mate, my notebook is padding out nicely
