Oil temp gauge vs. maxi-dot

Featured Replies

Hardly surprised  :)  Just wanted to know what you guys have to say about it. Even though there is noticeable improvement between April's and November's version of the manual some chapters are still poorly written...

To think i got picked on for saying the manual was poorly written and not very professional.

But then, i am the number 1 Skoda hater arent I Neily ;)

Modern motor oils work at all temperatures and (in my opinion) give enough lubrication irrespective of temperature.

The greatest wear on an engine comes directly after a cold start where the oil is in the sump.

The problem with pushing engines when the oil is at a low temperature is not the wear on the engine it is the shearing forces applied to the oil.  Under high load at low temperature the viscosity improvers (VI) added to multi grade oils break down and become less and less efficient, this is called shearing / sheared.  sheared oils change grade to a lower grade than needed to protect the engine.

Under high load situations the oil should be changed earlier then scheduled to maintain the correct spec and full protection or driving style modified (as per the manual) to reduce the shearing effects on the oil. In the old days the manual used to advise of earlier oil changes if you did short town driving and towing.
