I got a rear caliper off a gti from the breakers to get my car through a MOT. I think if it has a solid disk (232mm) they are the same. May be wrong, but mine was a straight swap.

difference piston size, will fit though

Would that work as a cheeky upgrade then if the have larger pistons but still attach to our carriers?

One simple way to check if they are the same is to get a part number by feeding both cars ID into ECP etc. First thing will be the "fist" width, next will be fitting detail, then slight issues like, does Golf have external return spring + does handbrake mechanism pull "up" or "down".
