Head gasket which one to buy

Featured Replies

I am doing the head gasket on my Fabia Vrs as I was losing water which head gasket do I buy on darkside there is 3 there is 1hole, 2hole, 3hole which one do I need I am in the middle of fitting a gtb2260vk if that makes any difference.

The number of holes denotes how thick the gasket is, basically when you get the cylinder head skimmed you select the thickness of gasket which is nearest to the amount that has been skimmed from the cylinder head if that makes sense. Although if you are in any doubt just get the thickest one, normally the machinist will stamp or mark the head in some way so you know how much has been skimmed off it for future reference.

edit; should have mentioned, when you buy a cylinder head gasket set for a Diesel engine it does not include a head gasket for this exact reason, you buy the gasket seperately choosing the thickness you want, 3 holes being the thickest.

Seems like a good excuse to get a ported head?

You'll be able to make better use of the 2260 & uprated injectors...

Sounds like your spending a fortune on it Dav!

Check the holes on your current one. Will be at the front left of the engine, get the head very slightly skimmed...

(remember pd heads don't like being skimmed! "Apparantly" you loose a lot of bhp so will be a shame to do lots of mods and loose bhp on a skimmed head)

....and then get one hole bigger than the one you have.

Good luck!

PD heads don't like being skimmed because the valve seats are almost flush with the head face, once they are flush they cannot be skimmed at all unless the seats are recut further into the head. I can't see how it would affect power since the combustion chamber is in the piston and that doesn't change. Generally speaking the head will take one or two 'truth' licks before it's done.

If the head can't be skimmed enough to get it true then you'll have to get a new casting and the existing valvegear rebuilt into that.

Are they sorting yours out? It was you who had the hard kit with the rubbing issues wasn't it Dav?

Google it. The valve isn't the issue, it's very finely set up compression for the injectors.

I don't need to. I used to be an Engineering manager at a firm that reconditioned these heads (amongst many other things), the skimming limit is the valve seat.

We would supply a thicker gasket appropriate to the amount we'd had to take off so that the compression and belt timing would be the same as before.
