Comparing Octavia against other cars

Featured Replies

Please can we stop the comparison threads! Except those who are looking for advice on issues related to the car we have all decided to purchase, I assume, following extensive research and sensible assessment of what can be afforded and that the Octavia fits the bill.

I would like a Lamborghini but can't afford that and it's no good as a family car so should I set up a thread to compare this? Pointless!

Surely you're in no way obligated to read each and every thread and post?
That doesn't sound like a reasonable request. I'm sure many people find "car X is like this whereas Octy is like that" type info either interesting, helpful or at least amusing. Also it might be part of the mentioned "extensive research and sensible assessment" for some.

PS: Lambos have noticably firmer ride and smaller ground clearance than the Octavia. But test drive both!

I have driven a Gallardo (friends car) and would agree with your comment on ride. I also agree, and havent read every thread that compare and contrast. It just feels that there is always an element of ' I would have prefered to have bought ....'   If thats how people feel then keep it to yourselves as there are many happy owners out there.

Before anyone makes a comment I could have purchased a BMW, AUDI,Merc etc but made my choice and very happy with it.

I understand that the rearward view from the driver's seat of most Lambos is inferior to that of a Skoda Octavia.

I beleive the servicing cost are also higher.  Not to mention fuel consumption and insurance costs.  And I suspect that the boot is also smaller.

But nevertheless, some people seem to like them, so they must have some merit.  Probably the dayglo colours they come in.

I like the comparison threads. I'm in the market for a new car this year and it is always interesting to read what other people considered alongside the Skoda.

My current shortlist is a Mazda 6 Tourer 2.2D Sport or the Octavia VRS - both have pros and cons and I'm finding it hard to choose. The views of people who've driven them for longer than a 30 minute test-drive are always welcome.

Ditto, obviously comparing two widely different vehicles helps nobody but browsing marque specific sites like these if you're looking to buy a new motor can be extremely helpful.

BMW were quite surprised with me last week as I went to test drive a 430d Coupe and they asked me what else I was looking at.  Then I went back to tell them I had bought a vRS estate they nearly fell over lol.  I guess its different strokes for different folks!

The day I went to put the deposit down on my VRS I popped into a BMW garage round the corner (and a few others) just to have a look and make sure their were no doubts. He asked how soon I was looking for a car and I told him that I was actually on my way to another a garage to put a deposit down but wanted to make sure I had ruled out all the competition before putting down my money. He asked what car and I said a Octavia VRS and he laughed. He confirmed my views that 99% of BMW drivers are ****s and I walked out of the garage. I love a few of their cars but could never bring myself to own one...although I suppose I thought that about Skoda before I put the deposit down.

Well, I personally prefer the VRS TSI to my 320D, but my favorite cars have to have been Subaru #1 and the Subaru #2. The 87 3dr Cossie wasn't bad either but it went walkies whilst I was waiting for a Chinese takeaway one evening and was turned into a bonfire before I saw it again. The Octy also comfortably beats the 2x Mondeo's, 2x Polo's, Beetle, Golf, Punto, Fiesta XR2, Escort RS Turbo and Cortina I have owned. Funnily enough it was the mk4 1.6GL Cortina which gave me the most success with the ladies. KJW 478W was it's name and driving at motorway speeds within it was a true white-knuckle ride.

Looks like we both went to Arden then Beadles then! lol

Strange post. Surely comparisons are a normal process and expected when a new car purchase is on the cards. I don't think comparing a Passat to an Octavia is like comparing an Octavia to a Lamborghini in any sense and asking for advice on one similar car compared to the Octavia is valuable as some Briskodians have had the other car - what better audience to ask for opinion?! :)

Surely more a judgement about the dealers rather than drivers?

He also drove a BMW

He also drove a BMW

Ha ha. Not only does he drive a beeeeemer but he doesn't pay for it and looks down on others....I agree with any and all of your criticisms. Glad he's lost a sale

I agree - comparison threads are extremely helpful, although Octavia v 3-series is just a teeny bit more useful than Octavia v. Lamborghini....

I asked for s test drive in a 3-series Touring while thinking last year about a replacement for my second vRS: the demonstrator the dealer had was a 330d. and it was a great car.  But the real test is how you feel when you get back into your own car - and the Octavia wasn't disgraced.  Hence my third vRS, which as I've said in another thread has made an excellent start.

Yes, the 3-series has some areas where it's superior.  But you tend to notice them most if you're boy-racing on twisty B-roads. I'm 65 and I don't, although I like to get a move on (otherwise I'd have been happy with the 1.4 TSI).

I went to look at a BMW estate before I bought my octavia

All the nice ones were about £10k more, and you didnt get much more than an elegance or VRS. New ones with all the kit were nearly £40K... !!!!!

I might buy some of there shares, they must make a fantastic profit each year

Maybe opening this slightly pointless thread was the only way for the OP to tell us that he drove a Lamborghini?

Well, at least it's a VAG car...

The point of the thread was that the Octavia stands on its own merit, it's not like, or pretending to be something else, it is what it is, a good car.

Well, to resurrect an old thread - I made the decision in the end and have ordered the Mazda. The combination of the Octavia price hike, the end of the 0% PCP and the long waiting times swung things in favour of the Mazda overall.

Part of me is sad to leave Skoda behind (I owned Skodas for 11 years before my current Citroen) - I had 8 and a half very happy years with my MkI VRS (chipped by Jabbasport), I loved that car. But in the end I think I've made the right choice for me.

Can't promise to stop lurking in the forums though - haven't managed to find any Mazda forums as good as the Briskoda ones
