Losing coolant vrs

Featured Replies

Hi can anybody help plz, it's a pd170 I'm losing coolant from header tank due to pressurising after I've been hit high speeds, I lose a tank after just 10 minutes

That losing a lot of coolant it might be worth a pressure test but water pumps are common ground on the 170bhp is she over heating at speed???

Thnx for reply. It never use to overheat but as the problems got worse it overheats now.

Think it might be a water pump does it over heat when at speed or when at idle??

Only over heats when hitting 70mph+ because that's when it loses coolant. It can lose a tank of coolant within a couple of mile run when hitting 80-90mph. Yet I could cruise at 60-65 for 100miles and not a problem

Please people it's a taxi and it's affecting my lively hood so more on this would be very appreciated thank you.

Can you not take it up to the speed at which the coolant quickly disappears and then pull over (motorway services etc.) and check for evidence of the leak?

If you are able to empty the header tank in only a few minutes there is bound to be visible evidence of the coolant in the engine bay or from under the car.

When I once sprung a leak and lost coolant, as the car began to overheat (before I noticed to rising temperature gauge) it quickly became clear there was an issue due to the steam / water vapour in the rear view mirror.

At least you can stick below 70mph until you can get it to a garage, I'd imagine your customers might prefer it too :giggle:

Sorry I forgot to mention the coolant is lost from coolant tank due to too much pressure build up.

It maybe over preasurising because its over heating, could be water pump as already said, could be more serious like a head gasket or cracked head either way if its overheating your going to do more damage by driving it,best get it into a garage asap.

I'd go with a water pump dude I've done a few of these on the 170bhp! Best way to check remove the little pipe off the coolant bottle and get someone to rev the car hard and if there is water pumping out of the pipe then the pump is ok if nothing comes out the water pump is screwed and needs a new one!! Hope this helps

Before I use to lose coolant but it never overheated. I'm gonna get the water pump changed this week and see how it goes. Thank everybody.

Remember to change the cambelt too. May as well as it has to come off to gain access to the water pump.
