Gear stick wont centre on my Vrs!

Featured Replies

Anyone else had this problem?!?!

My gear stick wont centre on my Vrs makes driving awkward! If i push it all the way to the left it just stays there.

A local garage has told me its the 'gear selector' which i find no reference to in my trusty haynes manual, they want 3 hours labour plus parts, surely its just a spring?

Any ideas??

Have a search on here for gearbox alignment - took me 10 mins to do and gearbox nice and tight again, should sort that issue out by the sounds of it

Sounds like the same problem I have. Do you struggle finding gears as well? (e.g. confusing 1st and 3rd)

I've been driving like this for 2 years now :D

Yep, have a few times tried shoving it into 1st much to the rev counters disapproval, what worries me is if i have done it a few times, what has the wife managed!

I will read up on the alignment, thanks for the tip, wha do you think my local garage were banging on about 'gear selector!'

I'm pretty sure there's a guide in the technical guides section - try searching for gear linkage ;)

It'll break the bank when I have to pay a mech to fix my f*** ups. Here's an example of what happens when you put a screwdriver in my hands:

That used to a be a fully-functioning PC. That was 2 years ago... and it still looks the same! I don't do hands on with moving parts, I do artwork, painting and Photoshop! Plus the car was painted during my holiday and done in a record of 10 hours.

The way I see it... it's still drivable so no point in me making it worse :p

No excuse mate, I'm a designer by trade (was a marine engineer though lol) and still fix stuff ;) The gearbox alignment is literally a 10 minute job, only tools needed are a pin or screw the right size and your hands. You only have to unclip one pipe and the rest is done through the engine bay and in the car itself- very quick and very painless and makes a big difference.

you guys both sound like a simple gear lever / selector adjustment exercise is needed as 1st and 3rd problems are classic examples of a out of aligned set of selectors. The selectors are at the ends of the gearbox cables that have springs on the ends that are supposed to auto adjust the play but can get thrown out. a simple free 5 minutes of time can fix this and the difference you will be amazed.

Now I am just cringing at that comment dude...........

It would just bug me to extreme to not have it working as it should......

It bugs the crap out of me!

I will try the alignment fix this weekend and let you know, and I assume this will fix the gear stick issue, ie it won't spring back to the centre, I have to physically move it to the middle. If it works I wont be using my local garage again.

I'm OK with a screw driver its when the hammer comes out things get messy!

Nah, adds to the whole "Mad Max" experience. I just need to knock the wheel alignment out a little, make something smoke and I'll have a true "apocalypse" car :D

I wonder if I can make it bang like Uncle Buck's car...

IF it's decatted you can most turbo cars to pop- rev it up so the turbo just begins to spool fully and the ECU begins to add alot of fuel, let the revs drop then rev it again quite hard. Try it a few times and it'll eventually backfire or pop. WHat you;re trying to do is get unburnt fuel to detonate giving the pop or backfire. Some tuners can even map it in a pop when they tune your car if you request it- not recommended though as it doesn't do your engine any favours and turns your oil black pretty sharpish

I was thinking of you car when I looked at the new fast car mag.

The one with the new shape yellow BMW M3. It has riveted wheel aches on. These seem to be the fashion again and would look great on your motor.

Sent from my Samsung S3

THe old rivet look is very much back in right now, you get the same effect using fake rivet heads- couple of places sell em and you just glue them on

Have you tried using a good silicone grease around the bottom of the gear stick housing?

Common fault is the factory lube dries out, or gets to hot and drops to the bottom (sits just above the exhaust) and causes the gear stick to stick in the housing.

I had the same problem at 30k miles, been lubed once a year since and never had the problem again (now on 125k).

Lift the gaiter and it's pretty obvious what needs doing.

Lifted the gaiter and its pretty hanging under there gonna strip it out clean it and lube it up, do the alignment see if it works, let you know.

Cheers Chaps!

They get manky under there, if you think thats bad then check under your handbrake, it'll be absolutely lifting lol

OK problem FIXED!

This was my problem incidently (not my video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43NiiCk7UPE

Firstly tried linkage alignment but no good.

Secondly stripped down cleaned and greased the gear stick assembly and checked neither of the cables had ceased, which they had not.

Then discovered the pivot for the vertical movement on the gearbox located on the left as you look in was ceased pretty stiff, took 'gentle' persuation from a super long screwdriver and hammer to get it apart, (with the airbox removed), cleaned polished and greased, now works ace!

If i can work out how to put up pictures and if anyones interested i will post of a pic of the problem pivot.

Thanks to everyone for there suggestions.

well solved

Very interested, noticed today that mine is doing the same thing.

Pics would be very welcome - that video is of my car and I've still got the problem... even after lubing the crap out of gear stick. Your solution might solve mine :p
