Hi Everyone! Desperately seeking help!!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm Holly from Cambridgeshire, and I own an Octavia 1.6 GLXi and I love it!

The only thing is that it has developed an intermittent fault, which has managed to evade 3 garages and numerous diagnostic computers, as the problem never occurs when its at the garage! Arrrgggh!!

It can happen at any time, day or night, no matter how many journeys during the day, cold or hot weather, sometimes it doesn't happen for months, sometimes 3 or 4 times a day!

It usually starts perfectly, then about 3/4 hundred yards down the road it dies on me, usually in the most awkard places, junctions, roundabouts etc.. then it doesn't want to start again. When its just about starting to run again, if you touch the accellerator, it dies again. When it does eventually start again, the revs just go up and up and up, without touching any pedals, and only goes down bit by bit when u press on the gas.

Like I said, it never happens for the garage, a few passers-by have suggested the automatic choke sticking.... which the garage have tried to check but of course the problem doesn't occur so it looks fine??

HAS ANYONE ELSE HADE A SIMILAR PROBLEM?? WHAT WAS THE CURE?? HELP ME PLEASE!!

Hiya Holly,

good to have another female on board!:D

Don't know the answer to your Q but someone might do soon. How about posting a thread about it in the "ask a tech" forum.

welcome btw!

Fuel injected cars don't have chokes.

I'm no expert but I reckon its a faulty sensor. Probably not the Mass Flow Air Sensor. It tends to cause the car act like it's on kangaroo petrol before switching the car into 'safe home' mode when it eventually fails completely.

I'd bet on something like a gearbox or manifold sensor. Probably just a dodgy connection on one of these or you could visually check the wiring loom for any damaged cables that may be shorting to the car body.

The other possibility is a faulty iginition coil or connection. This is hard for the DIY mechanic to test though. From my experience if the coil is failing it will tend to start to play once it has heated up for a while. I don't think this really applies to you though.

Intermittent faults like these are the worse kind and potentially dangerous too when driving at speed. Be careful, best to take it to an expert who will be familiar with such problems and can usually diagnose them quickly. I doubt there is anything wrong with your engine though.

Hope this helps

Had a very similar problem in my 1.6, it WILL get worse, to the point where the car won't start again and you'll need to be taken to a garage on the back of a tow truck...so make sure you're a member of a decent recovery service. :D

It transpired to be a problem with the crank position sensor...this was replaced, IIRC it was about £120 all in...

Rob.

I would guess at sensor. A friend of mine's mum Nissan had a very similar habit as your Ocatavia. The back street mechanics went all around the house by replacing various bits until someone suggested a sensor. By then it was a bit too late seeing as the car repairs had cost well over a thousand pounds!

If it's a faulty sensor it should store an error code that will show up on the right diagnostic equipment, does entirely depend on what the garage was using, a VAG specific diagnostic tool like a 1551, 5051 or VAG-COM would be ideal.

Welcome to Briskoda. :) Whereabouts in Cambridgeshire do you live?

PS - I live near St Neots and have VAG-COM.

welcome :) hope things get sorted soon for you...

Thats what my hunch is, quite common on the 1.6.

Doesnt allways log a fault either.

No not always logs a fault, but if it happens enough it more than likely will.

Goodbye would be more appropriate as the original poster hasn't visited Briskoda since 26-08-2005! :(

And with that observation, this thread has now been put to bed permanently.
