Low Coolant Warning

Featured Replies

I checked it all yesterday as needed screenwash level was just below max. Engine was cold and on a level surface. But when I started the car this morning it flashed up low coolant. Could it be down to the fact it was blooming cold and a hard frost or something more sinister?

I would put my money on it being the sensor in the coolant reservoir. It is a common problem and the permanent solution is to replace the reservoir (ie plastic bottle complete with cap).

So long as it hasn't dropped.

We had the iissue on the Touran where it dumped it all overnight due to a crack in the flange the pump sits on.

I had this once on my old VRs and the fluid level was OK, I think my issue was due to contamination on the sensor prongs as I rubbed them and never saw the error again.

I had this!

It first happened back in 2012 when we had those really harsh temperatures, well into the minus.

More than once I switched on and got the message. I personally assumed that maybe Anti-Freeze levels were low and that we had ice in the system - as once the temperature of the car had increased so the error lights went away.

Anyway, didn't do anything until the first minus mornings of last year - same thing happened again.

Took the car in under warranty and they replaced the reservoir bottle and all fixed.

How easy is it to just change the sensor?

^ It's try this before you spend real money and long as the level is visually ok.

There are two prongs in the coolant reservoir, they get furred up over the years and give a false signal. Get a long screwdriver and give them a bit of a scrape.

If that doesn't work it'll be worth looking into buying new parts.
