Skoda Columbus Software Issues

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I have a Skoda Columbus and wanted some help!

It is 3T0 035 680  HW: H11  and  SW: 1164

The unit is playing up on me very randomly, It will turn on to the boot logo and then randomly turn off. It will do this continuously. I have Vagcom so had a look on that but don't know what I could do on there. I have tried the SWL disc and it went through the whole process but doesn't seem to work. Please can you help me which firmware to load or what I can do? I tried the version 4024 disc however when I insert it into the unit it wont recognize it as its going through a boot loop.

Have you burned the disc from the image file or just copied the image to the disc?  If it is the latter it won't be recognised as a firmware disc. Apologies if this is a silly question but it is a mistake often made.

yes definitely burned correctly and I burned the iso file as as an Image. can anyone advise me as to what firmware I should try load and how? seeing as though its in a boot loop, I don't know how it would read the disc.

Probably 4020 will do the trick if you can get it to do recognise the disk.  Have you tried a reset on the Columbus - pressing <, > & i at the same time?

yes tried that, and that doesn't seem to work. whats next?

I see you have contributed to the other thread where Ned had this issue which was my next thought but according to that all he did was insert the disc.  Maybe worth checking with him whether it was unmodified or modified 4024 firmware, and as he seems to have the same unit, follow his actions to the letter.

The only other thing I can think of is to try a HDD replacement but this is a guessing the source of the problem, see: http://www.carsystems.pl/rns510-hdd-40gb,id174.html or http://www.carsystems.pl/skoda-colmbus-trinax-hdd-30gb,id172.html, probably the latter for your unit.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Update to this: I managed to get it to work by loading on 1300 Firmware. Happy days!! Im going to now try and update the 27xx firmware and progressively update on from there.

Unmodified 4020 won't work on that age of Columbus in my experience (might be proved wrong though).

Try 3180a.

What age of car do you have?

What CAN gateway fitted?

Good news. I was veering towards modified too. See www.rnsfirmware.com.

its a 2008, im not sure what CAN gateway fitted but should be one of the newer ones? shouldnt have any problems with battery drain?

been searching around a few forums and all have told me / or I have read to update the firmware in stages rather than jumping.reason being is the 3810 repartitions the hard drive and I think that's what may be stopping the 4020 update.

2008 should be fine with the original CAN gateway, so that can be eliminated.

It is possible that you may need to go to the first available firmware that partitioned 3 ways first and then on from there. But I have know people go from 1xxx firmware straight to higher versions skipping this stage out.

It's worth trying as, apart from a CD, you have nothing to lose.

I do still think that the issue is that your Columbus is too old to go to this high a firmware. Yours is a revision A (I believe). If you read this firmware page on My GTi your unit is not listed (yours does not have the 'A' suffix to the part number). Firmware 2704 onwards all list the 3T0...A unit as being the minimum and do not list your 3T0 unit.

Yes I think it might be Revison A, The unit does not mention A after the serial number. what firmware do you think I can go to? I'll download that right away and try updating the RNS. Bear in mind, I want to try and have the latest maps for 7 digit postcode search. Thanks

I updated my post while you were typing - sorry.

38xx is the first firmware to make three partitions, so might be worth trying an unmodified 3810 first. Then, if that works, go to 4020.

I believe that 268x is the latest unmodified firmware you can go to. There is a 3810a modified firmware that you can use I believe. There may even be a modified 4020 firmware now - I don't check sites such as GPS Underground or VW Navi that often to see what is going on. Worth a look at those to see.

adamal is the better source of info on that one.

ill wait for adamal's reply. thanks for your help! one cracking piece of kit

The modified 4020 I pointed you to on www.rnsfirmware.com is what I use and I have a revision A Columbus. I went via 3810 but I know people who went straight to 4020 so you will probably be ok from 1300 to this, apart from needing to reinstall maps (v7.2 or higher needed for full functionality including points of interest. Battery drain shouldn't be an issue for you.

Modified 4020 does appear to be as far as we can go with revision A units though.

excellent adam, I'll try that. thanks

Do you have steering wheel controls? I ask as these need a further software update to work after upgrading.

yes I do have steering wheel controls, what software update do I need for those?

It is a very quick one. See here:

http://www.my-gti.com/3374/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-and-information

(the third of the fixes at the bottom of the page). Apply it after loading 4020, although to recognise the disc, you may first need to enable sw downgrade in the secret menu, which appears after the upgrade (hold setup for 20 secs).
