Vrs road noise - help!

Featured Replies

Just bought an 06 VRS with 80k miles but full skoda service (10 stamps in the book). Got it from a used car dealer. Since we got it 2wks ago have discovered the battery was knackered - had that replaced & the garage are gonna reimburse me cos the warranty won't cover it. Have also had the front wheel bearings replaced as one was def worn, but my mechanic is worried that the noise is still there which leaves either tyres or gearbox?!!! I'm hoping its tyres, does anyone know how I wld tell if it is the gearbox? The noise is like a low constant drone once you get above 20mph (hence thinking it was wheel bearings..., Even sounds similar to a mild blowing exhaust noise). The car drives fine otherwise, just hoping I haven't been taken for a ride by the garage that sold it...? :( (I know I should go straight back to them but its a 150 mile round trip which i can only do on a saturday so trying to avoid that!)

Best ask in the Fabia 1 Section as well.

Best thing is get someone with mechanical knowledge & good hearing  in the car with you and see if they can identify the source of the noise.

For a moment there i thought you had the highest mileage mk2.

My mk1 turned a left hand rear tyre into a 50 pence piece once, that sounded like a wheel bearing/exhaust drone and had me puzzled for sometime before I finally sussed it! I put new pair of rear tyres on and it was sorted and never had it happen again.

What tyres are on it? Are they all matching? Tyre pressures all up to spec? When did it last have a wheel alignment done, if ever? Might be the first things to check.

My mark one dud this for a while, Avon zz3's, turns out one was disintegrating :( going oval ! A change of tyres fixed it :)

Thanks guys, from your replies & prev posts on here I'm still thinking (hoping!) its tyres - there's an advisory on the last MOT ref 1 of the tyres (back ns I think without looking) & the front os is def low. So will start there & keep fingers crossed.. :)

& sorry for posting in the wrong section! It's my 4th Skoda (VRS, 2 Octavia L&Ks previously) so got a bit confused between MkI & II!
