The last time F1 ran turbos

Featured Replies

As the new F1 season is due to start next month I found some old photos of the last time F1 ran turbos. The photo of Mansell in the Williams Honda was 1987 in the race where he passed Piquet with a few laps to spare. That was almost the end of the turbo era. The next photos (mostly in the rain) was 1988 when turbos and normally aspirated engines ran together. The photo of Mansell in the Williams Judd (non turbo) is at the end of the race when he finished second to Senna. The photo of Senna is him in the Mclaren with the Honda Turbo. The other photo is Mauricio Gugelmin in the Adrian Newey designed March Judd.

Hope these bring back some memories.Mansell87_zps103273b5.jpg?t=1391950815.Mansell88_zpsb28a1924.jpg?t=1391950853Senna88_zps4c18ab77.jpg?t=1391950771LeytonHouse88_zps3c8af028.jpg?t=13919509

This was an era of real engineering innovation; the Williams FW14B being one example.

1500bhp from a 1.5 litre engine in qualifying was plain scary just to watch on TV; can you imagine driving one? By all accounts they were kept just on the right side of meltdown with some very clever (for the time) electronics and after qualifying would need to be rebuilt.

Back when Williams were doing much better than now.

Hopefully a return to Turbos will see them back at the top

I do miss the sparks. That's some serious low running.

They can bring back those noses!!

And the skid plates.
