CV Boot replacement - Can it be done without any specialist tools?

Featured Replies

I know you normally need a set of CVJ Boot/Hose pliers like these to tighten the boot clip. However, are these really necessary or would a set of thin nose long nose pliers surffice?

I just dont like buying tools that I will probably only use once or twice every 10 years.

Thanks.

No, you won't be able to use thin nose long nose pliers. If you look at the CVJ pliers in your link, you will see that they are 9" long but the pivot is only about 1" from the jaws giving high leverage. Between the jaws is a moving backstop that holds the ears of the clip in the correct position.

In an emergency, you could use pincers with the jaws blunted or covered up.

OK, thanks for the feedback.

Oh s0d it, I'll the order the proper tool. I hate stuggling with something that wasnt designed for the job (with all been there!).

Better now before I start, rather than at the end & not be able to do it properly.
