Time to extend the warranty... or not?

Featured Replies

Well I can't believe we've had the car nearly a year now.

Car was bought from DM Keith in York.

20,000 miles on the clock and came with a year warranty.

We have done 12,000 miles in it.

We have had just a few small issues:

Squeek on start-up- found to be starter motor- replaced under warranty

Flickering dash lights and doors locking/unlocking- ignition switch- new switch and barrel (as this was also broken) fitted under warranty

Handbrake gaitor thingy broken in 2- fixed under warranty

Rumble at 1100rpm- air intake rattling- Skoda said it was fixed but it's come back (will just sort DIY)

Other than that we're very happy. Car is super smooth and the DSG is just a dream.

So... do I get another warranty?!

I was looking at 3rd party warranties which cover more than the skoda one.

It's just such an unknown. The car has been fine and certainly doesn't have any warning signs of anything underlying. You just don't know what's round the corner.

What did anyone esle do?

Peace of mind and get the warranty or stick some money to one side?

Phil

Putting the money aside will not cover a major failure. It will however cover the wear & tear items.

All depends on if you're up for the gamble or not.

My car reaches 3yrs old in April, so end of original Skoda warranty. I probably will renew for the next 2yrs (the estimated time I was going to keep the car). Means I get Skoda Assist for the next 2yrs and the warranty will be with the dealership (my local Skoda main dealer) that I trust will get the work done.

Nearly 7yr for mine.

I'd definitely have been worse off taking buy a warranty for the years after it finished.

It's insurance, I'd bank the cash myself.

When my warranty finished i didnt bother, that was nearly 2 years ago & apart from the ignition switch(which i replaced myself for £15) the car has been fine. (fingers crossed!)  I know that the DSG box can be expensive to repair IF it goes wrong but your car hasnt even done 40k yet so should be fine.

I'm in the same boat as you & I'm due to go to France a fortnight after my 3rd birthday so the addidtion of Skoda assist would sweeten the deal for me. Do you call Skoda for this extended warranty or do they generally write/email you? Would be good to know if I need to do anything or not.

sorry to hijack this one a bit Phil but it struck a chord with me.

IIRC you can only purchase the skoda extended warranty prior to taking delivery of a new car. If you want an extended warrenty at this stage I think you need to contact the dealer and arrange it through them (or get one independent ly) If they offer a skoda backed warrenty it may not be the same as the original one so check the small print or ask them to explain whats covered and what isn't before you buy. Think its around £600 for another 2 years. Good luck

When I had my pre-FL at the end of the warranty period I was offered a new one for either 1 or 2 years by my local dealership.

I was told it covered everything the original Skoda one did (on reading through the main points it certainly appeared so) and continued to give me access to Skoda Assist at the same level.

I've not enquired as to if that same warranty will be on offer when the warranty on my FL expires in a couple of months - I'll be at the dealership in March to get the cars first MOT, so I'll find out then.
